Regime’s USDP Parliaments appointed USDP’s President- Thein Sein

This afternoon, news emerged that Burmese junta’s newly-convened parliaments elected vice-president and retired general U Thein Sein as new President of Burma with 408 votes out of 659. Holding the position of Prime minister appointed by current regime’s War Council, Thein Sein, an ex-general, ran in the last year election for the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

It is a matter to keep watch how he will form a government, and who will occupy the minister posts in the Cabinet. According to the junta’s 2008 constitution, the President shall lead the Nation Defense and Security Council regarding the armed forces.

Burmese in Rakhine Still Short of Relief Aid and Program- WAO told MoeMaKa

Cyclone Giri struck the Rakhine coast on October 22-23 in 2010, devastating many people, buildings, and businesses in the region. Moemaka was able to have a chance to interview a Rakhine social organization about its experience and activities for providing relief aids, and rehabilitation of the storm-affected areas. The organization said that Burmese residents of New York City (NYC) are planning to launch a fund raising, coming February 20. Moemaka recently spoke with Ko Kyaw Win and Ko Zaw Zaw Htun, spokespersons for the World Arakanese Organization (WAO), whichcarries out the job of rebuilding areas destroyed by Cyclone Giri.  A news bulletin in Burmese based in Sanfrancisco Bay area was lunched yesterday. The bulletin states a monthly publication of Burmese American Heritage Foundation, called “Bay Area Burmese Bulletin” (in English) and “Mingalar Monthly”(in Burmese.) The fact that it is an independent periodical and not affiliated with any news agency, politics, or religion, is clearly described. It also states that this bulletin will provide news from inside Burma, reports of Bay area Burmese community, and information about Burmese culture and honorable activities of Burmese nationals.

CoBA SF chapter to host fund raising in coming January 23

 The second awarding ceremony of Citizen of Burma Association (CoBA) will be held on May of 2011. The first was convened in L.A. The association is planning to hold this 2nd event in the San Francisco Bay area. Thus, CoBA SF chapter will launch a fund raising in coming Jan 23, so that CoBA will be able to present its award by majority vote to non-profit social organizations and individuals from inside Burma.
