Resistance marks the 38th anniversary of the 1988 Uprising
Speaking at a ceremony marking the anniversary of the 1988 pro-democracy movement, Acting President Duwa Lashi La said the resistance continues to pursue methods that reduce harm to civilians while advancing the struggle against military rule.
He acknowledged that the prolonged conflict has placed increasing burdens on the public but stressed that both political and armed resistance remain necessary to end dictatorship. He also emphasized the importance of passing the responsibilities of the revolution to future generations.
The NLD reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that military dictatorship never returns and pledged to continue working toward the establishment of a federal democratic union.
CRPH rejects junta’s political reforms
The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) said the military’s recent political changes are merely cosmetic and will not produce meaningful improvements for Myanmar.
In a statement marking the 38th anniversary of the 1988 Uprising, CRPH argued that the military continues to ignore the will of the people while seeking international legitimacy. The committee urged democratic forces to strengthen unity and cooperation to permanently end military rule.
Airstrikes kill civilians in Karen and Sagaing
The Karen National Union (KNU) reported that the military carried out repeated airstrikes in Hpapun District between August 1 and August 6 using fighter jets and Y-12 aircraft.
According to the KNU, three civilians were killed, 49 others were injured, and churches, schools and numerous homes were damaged.
In Katha Township, Sagaing Region, a separate airstrike killed one woman and seriously injured her husband. Local sources said there had been no active fighting in the village when the attack occurred.
Fighting intensifies on multiple fronts
Heavy fighting continued in several resistance areas.
In Nat Yae Kan, near the Magway–Rakhine border, resistance sources said the military dropped more than 100 bombs after suffering setbacks in ground fighting.
The Chin People’s Organization/Army (CPU/CPA) reported that resistance forces have been defending against military offensives in southern Chin State for nearly three months despite large troop deployments.
Meanwhile, KIA-led forces reportedly ambushed a military column in Shwegu Township, seizing weapons and ammunition before the military responded with further airstrikes.
Four resistance groups form military alliance
Four resistance organizations from Sagaing, Magway and Mandalay announced the formation of a new military alliance aimed at strengthening cooperation in operations against military rule.
The alliance said it would coordinate military activities more effectively and continue working with other groups that share the goal of ending military dictatorship and establishing a federal democratic system.
Floods leave people dead, missing and displaced
Severe flooding continued across Sagaing Region and northern Shan State following the release of water from the Thaphanseik Dam and heavy rainfall.
At least 10 people were reported dead or missing, including farm workers and children swept away by floodwaters. Tens of thousands of households have been affected, with urgent shortages of food, clean water, medicine and emergency relief supplies.
Local sources said 11 townships in Sagaing Region are experiencing severe flooding and appealed for immediate humanitarian assistance.
8-8-88 commemorations held despite security restrictions
Residents and activists in Hpakant, Kachin State, held demonstrations marking the 38th anniversary of the 1988 Democracy Uprising despite heavy security measures.
Participants also protested against the Myitsone Dam project, called for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, and reaffirmed their opposition to military rule.
Similar commemorative events were held in resistance-controlled areas and in Bangkok, where activists used the symbolic red umbrella associated with the 1988 movement.
Korea-Myanmar civil society rejects junta legitimacy
Korean and Myanmar civil society organizations jointly declared that they do not recognize Myanmar’s military-led government, arguing that changing military titles or official positions does not alter the nature of military rule.
The groups urged ASEAN members and the South Korean government not to grant political legitimacy to the military leadership and pledged continued support for Myanmar’s democratic movement.
