Today’s reports include KIA’s capture of military vessels and more than 100 prisoners of war during fighting between Shwegu and Bhamo; attacks on military forces in Tanintharyi and Sagaing; civilian casualties from artillery and drone attacks; the KNDF’s first conference; more than 200 civilian deaths linked to reported military human rights violations in August; and reports that the military is beginning to collect information on young Myanmar nationals living abroad for conscription purposes.
KIA Says More Than 100 Prisoners Captured in Shwegu-Bhamo Fighting
The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) said its joint forces captured several military vessels and more than 100 prisoners of war during fighting along the Ayeyarwady River between Shwegu and Bhamo.
According to KIA’s information department, its forces attacked a military flotilla traveling north from Shwegu on September 2 between Zinbon and Sinkhan. One large military vessel sank and another was destroyed by fire.
After another vessel was attacked near Sinkhan Bridge, two additional boats reportedly approached the riverbank, raised white flags and surrendered. KIA said more than 100 people aboard the vessels were taken prisoner.
KIA also said its forces had previously driven military troops from their position at Zinbon village on August 29 and 30. The position had reportedly been used to protect military vessels traveling north along the river.
According to KIA-linked reporting, nine military vessels have been destroyed or disabled this year, compared with five during similar operations in 2025.
Only Six Military Vessels Reportedly Reach Bhamo
A military flotilla that left Mandalay on August 21 reportedly suffered heavy losses while traveling toward Bhamo.
The original group consisted of about 15 vessels. Following repeated attacks by KIA-led forces since August 27, nine were reportedly destroyed, disabled or captured, leaving only six able to reach Bhamo.
Reports said equipment, backpacks and military personnel from damaged vessels were seen floating in the Ayeyarwady River. Some soldiers reportedly drowned, while others swept downstream were rescued by resistance forces.
Seven surviving vessels stopped at Yeni Ywathit on the night of September 2 before continuing toward Bhamo. Six reportedly reached the area, while another became stranded.
Fighting remains intense, and the military is reportedly continuing airstrikes to protect the remaining vessels.
Military Column Attacked in Yebyu
Resistance forces reportedly attacked a military column entering villages in Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region, killing one soldier and wounding another.
The Ye Belu group said the first clash occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on September 3 when a column of about 50 troops entered Kywe Ta Lin village. Fighting lasted about 30 minutes.
A second clash reportedly took place near a military position in Ya Phu village at around 7 a.m. and lasted approximately 45 minutes.
The operation was jointly conducted by the Ye Belu Battalion and KNLA Battalion 27. The resistance groups said their fighters withdrew safely without casualties.
Artillery Attacks in Rakhine; Civilian Killed by Drone in Mahlaing
The Arakan Army (AA) reported that military vessels positioned offshore began firing artillery toward Gwa, Kyeintali, Gyeik Taw and surrounding areas on September 3.
AA urged residents to remain particularly alert to threats from both air and naval attacks.
Separately, a kamikaze drone reportedly struck Se Kwe village in Mahlaing Township. A man in his 50s and his wife were seriously wounded in the explosion. The man later died from his injuries while receiving medical treatment.
Military Troops Attacked While Searching for Supplies in Depayin
Resistance forces reportedly attacked military personnel who had left their positions in Depayin, Sagaing Region, to search for supplies.
According to the White People’s Defence Force (DPY), the clash occurred at around 11:45 a.m. on September 2 and lasted approximately 15 minutes.
The group said a military sergeant was killed and another soldier seriously wounded. The operation was carried out jointly with local People’s Defence organizations.
KNDF Sets Future Military and Political Direction at First Conference
The Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF) said its first conference established future priorities for military development as well as military and political objectives.
The two-day conference was held on August 28 and 29 and attended by 105 participants, including central committee members, regional commanders, department heads and battalion commanders. Fourteen of the participants were women.
Allied organizations also participated online, including Arakan Army Commander-in-Chief General Twan Mrat Naing.
KNDF reiterated that it intends to join international military agreements to strengthen international confidence in its policies and military regulations. It also said it would allow international monitoring and evaluation of its compliance with military codes of conduct.
Seven Military Personnel Defect with Weapons in Dawei and Launglon
Seven military personnel reportedly defected with weapons to the Special Guerrilla Force (SGF) in the Dawei and Launglon areas of Tanintharyi Region.
According to SGF, the seven soldiers contacted the resistance group and defected on May 5, bringing several weapons and ammunition with them. They were later transported to a safe area.
On the same day, SGF fighters also encountered three military personnel who had fled from Launglon police station. They were detained, and two grenades were reportedly recovered from them.
The group said the three had fled because they no longer wanted to remain with the military and were subsequently transferred to a liberated area.
NUG Says More Than 200 Civilians Killed in August
The National Unity Government (NUG) said the military committed 528 human rights violations across Myanmar during August, resulting in the deaths of more than 200 civilians.
According to the NUG, extrajudicial killings were the most frequently recorded violation, with 102 incidents. Mandalay Region recorded the highest number of reported violations, at 110.
Eight mass-killing incidents were also reported across Sagaing, Rakhine, Chin and Karenni areas, killing 68 civilians, including seven children.
The NUG recorded around 530 air attacks across 13 states and regions during the month, with Sagaing and Magway among the hardest-hit areas. These attacks reportedly killed 139 civilians, including 18 children under the age of 18, and injured 266 others.
Airstrikes also reportedly damaged 126 civilian homes, 17 religious buildings, 10 schools and four hospitals or clinics.
The NUG said it is documenting alleged war crimes with the goal of eventually holding those responsible accountable.
Military Reportedly Collecting Information on Young Myanmar Nationals Abroad for Conscription
The military authorities have reportedly begun collecting information on military-age Myanmar nationals living overseas as difficulties in recruiting new personnel continue.
According to a military source in Naypyitaw cited in the report, authorities are comparing household registration records with people actually residing in their communities. Information is reportedly being collected on people aged 18 to 35 who have left the country, including their destination countries and reasons for traveling abroad.
The collected information and lists of people considered to have failed to comply with military-service requirements will reportedly be entered into the National Service Information Management System (NSIMS).
Separately, the Rangoon Scout Network reported that eight young men were detained from streets in Hlaing Tharyar, Sanchaung, North Dagon and Mingala Taungnyunt townships on September 2.
Three men believed to be construction workers waiting for transportation in North Dagon and two men walking near Taw Win Plaza in Mingala Taungnyunt were reportedly forced into vehicles by plainclothes police.
Another young man was reportedly detained in Hlaing Tharyar, while two others were taken after security personnel checked pedestrians’ phones and bags near a school in Sanchaung.
