The Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) announced on November 28 that it has annulled the designation of “Kachin Special Region (1),” previously imposed by past authoritarian regimes to consolidate their power, which had harmed the unity of the Kachin people.

The statement highlighted that while the Kachin people have long sought self-determination and equality in federal structures, unsuccessful parliamentary negotiations left them no choice but to pursue armed resistance.

It emphasized the aim of fostering unity among all ethnic groups in the region without divisions. The KIO stated that they reclaimed the areas marked as “Special Region (1)” for integration and unity, ensuring the economic and social well-being of all residents.

The KIO pledged to rebuild the region with a policy rooted in compassion and sustainable development. It called on all residents and investors who previously lived or worked under the administration of Kachin Special Region (1) to cooperate in building a progressive, unified future.
