5. Seven Prisoners Reportedly Die From Malnutrition and Lack of Medical Care at Mawlaik-Kalay Prison

m.CDM | October 21, 2026
Seven prisoners, including an Indian national of Gurkha ethnicity, have reportedly died this year because of malnutrition and inadequate medical care at Mawlaik-Kalay Prison in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region.
The Kalay People’s Strike Steering Committee disclosed the deaths in a statement released on October 21.
According to the committee, prison authorities have systematically subjected inmates to food shortages, inadequate medical treatment and corruption, creating life-threatening conditions.
One of the deceased was identified as Buskal Khan, also known as Busket, an Indian national of Gurkha ethnicity.
He was arrested in early 2025 under Myanmar’s immigration laws and sentenced to six months in prison.
Although he completed his sentence and became eligible for release, he was reportedly kept in detention in Ward 3 of the prison.
According to the committee, Khan was a vegetarian who had lost contact with his family. He suffered severe malnutrition and deteriorating health while in detention.
Despite his worsening condition, prison authorities allegedly failed to provide appropriate nutritional supplements or medical treatment for more than two months. They also reportedly refused to transfer him to an outside hospital.
He died at approximately 5 a.m. on October 5, 2026.
The committee further alleged that prisoners at Mawlaik-Kalay Prison face systematic food deprivation, exploitation of food rations, physical abuse, corruption and denial of medical treatment.
Prisoners without family support are said to be particularly vulnerable, surviving on inadequate meals consisting mainly of watery bean soup and boiled water spinach.
The committee also accused prison authorities, including Captain Kyaw Htet Oo, who oversees Ward 3, of widespread bribery, intimidation and physical abuse of prisoners.

6. Myanmar’s UN Ambassador Accuses Junta of Weaponizing Forced Conscription and Enforced Disappearances

m.CDM | October 21, 2026
Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, has accused the military junta of systematically using enforced disappearances as a weapon to suppress opposition and break the resilience of the civilian population.
He described enforced disappearances as crimes against humanity.
Speaking during two discussions of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on October 20, the ambassador said the junta was using enforced disappearances and forced military recruitment to spread fear and extort money from civilians.
According to the ambassador, arbitrary arrests, torture and enforced disappearances have become routine methods of repression employed by the military.
Detainees are frequently held in interrogation centers without communication with the outside world, leaving their families unable to obtain information about their whereabouts or well-being.
He also highlighted the situation facing young people who are attempting to leave Myanmar to avoid forced military recruitment.
In seeking escape routes, many face additional risks of human trafficking and involvement in online scam operations, which the ambassador linked to the junta’s expanding criminal activities.
Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun further accused the junta of misusing advanced digital surveillance technologies to monitor, intimidate and threaten civilians.
He said women activists were particularly vulnerable to gender-based online harassment and humiliation intended to undermine their morale.
The ambassador urged the international community to firmly reject the junta’s deceptive narratives and take decisive action.
His recommendations included referring the situation in Myanmar to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and imposing immediate, targeted political, military and financial sanctions against the military junta.
