July 2 | Radio NUG

According to a report by Thai PBS World, Myanmar’s military junta has sent an official letter to Malaysia, the current chair of ASEAN, expressing its opposition to Timor-Leste’s bid to become a full member of the regional bloc in October.

In the official statement issued from Naypyidaw, the junta accused Timor-Leste of violating ASEAN’s principle of non-interference in internal affairs, as outlined in the ASEAN Charter.

The letter, signed by Htun Win Aung, Director-General of the ASEAN-Myanmar Coordination Department, warned that Timor-Leste’s continued involvement in Myanmar’s internal affairs would result in its membership application being “entirely rejected.”

Although ASEAN leaders had previously agreed in May to accept Timor-Leste as the 11th member of ASEAN, with necessary procedural steps scheduled for October, the junta has now called on the ASEAN Chair and Secretary-General’s Office to suspend further steps until Timor-Leste revises its stance and provides clear assurances regarding non-interference in Myanmar’s internal matters.

The All Burma Political Prisoners Network (PPNM) has reported that political prisoners were beaten, shackled, and subjected to punitive confinement for reciting poetry in honor of the birthday of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

On June 19, political prisoners at Myingyan Prison commemorated Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 80th birthday by reading poems as a tribute.

Furthermore, the prisoners were also subjected to restrictions on family visits and the receipt of care packages.

The PPNM stated that such actions by prison staff—violating human rights simply for reciting poetry—will be addressed through appropriate channels to ensure justice is served when human rights are restored in the country.
