I received letters from my readers who discussed with me the ‘Sunlun Way of Meditation’, and I heard their interest about the Sunlun Sayadaw; U Vinaya. I was familiar with the meditation since my childhood, because I was born in Burma, born as a Buddhist, and luckily I was born in the Buddhist family who are familiar with the Sunlun way of meditation. Here, I want to share you, this booklet that was written by my father, and he distributed to all the people around the world who are interested in Sunlun Way of Meditation.
The book called ‘ THE SUNLUN WAY OF MEDITATION. The Basics of the Method’ in both English and Burmese language, is now freely for all the public to know the Sunlun way of meditation. Originally in Burmese was written by the Venerable monk from Pathein. My father; Dr. Khin Maung Win, Retired Professor of Mathematics (University of Rangoon, Burma), translated this booklet into English in 2009, and distributed free to all.
Before I gave you the full text of ‘The Sunlun Way of Meditaion’, I gave the explanation of the words which I mentioned above as a title as ‘Dhamma- Dana’ to the non-Burmese readers. Firstly I gave you the direct meanings of the Pali terms ‘damma’ and ‘danna’. ‘Dhamma’ means‘doctrine’, and ‘Danna’ means ‘act of giving’. Whatever the direct meaning, it is the spirit in which the expression has been used that matters. In spirit, the expression is used to mean that the booklet is distributed free of charge to promote the Buddhist meditation method – in particular, the Sunlun method, taught by the Sunlun Sayadaw. It is the method by which He Himself attained Enlightenment.
Here we go……

Prerequisite
With great respect for the Buddha
And for the Attainment of the Nirvana-
The final enlightenment
I give my body and mind
To the practice of meditation
In accordance with Buddha’s teaching.
Let all beings – high and low
Rejoice at my good deed
And let me, in turn
Rejoice at the good deeds of others.

THE SULUN WAY OF MEDITATION
The Basics of the Method
TOUCH – AWARENESS – MINDFULNESS
These are the three words which constitute
The whole Sunlun method of meditation.
Touch and awareness
Be mindful of these two;
When there is touch
There’s awareness;
Just be mindful of that awareness
Page 3
The Practice : First Part :
The breathing
Choose a suitable place,
Sit in the upright position,
Close your eyes and mouth,
Without listening to any sound,
Keep your mind on the tip of your nose,
Be mindfully aware
Only the touch of the air
Which goes in and out.
That’s all there is to it.
Page 4
Of the doors of the body
The nostrils from the gateway
To attainment of Enlightenment.
For that reason, the Sunlun way
Is based on the awareness of touch
Of the air, going in and out
Of the nostrils.
The harder the breathing,
The harder the touch,
and
The stronger will be the awareness,
Page 5
The stronger the awareness,
The easier it is to be mindful.
And so, without rest
Without stopping
Without changing position
Without rubbing to relieve itching,
Keep the mind
Only on the awareness of touch
Till comes the times to stop.

The Pratice : Second Part :
Knowing the Sensation
As the teacher instructs the yogi
To stop breathing,
The yogi takes one last in – breath
And stops- sitting still
He will then become aware of the sensations
Going through the whole body
Keep your mind on those sensations.
That is the main thing.
It’s so easy to tell
Yet doing it in practice-
It’s another thing.
Page 7 …
However difficult.
However impossible it seems.
Just be mindful of those sensations.
Keeping your body still
Without moving an inch
Without letting your mind wander
The key word here is
AS IT IS
” IT ” means whatever sensation that arises.
If it is pain
Know that it is pain.
The sensation of pain,
But not the name.
Page 8 …
.If it be cramp or ache or numbness or
Heat or cold.
Know the fact that it is so,
The sensation as it is,
But not the name.
Know whatever arises
As it arises.
When it arises,
In the bare fact that it arises.
Know it only ” as it is ”
meaning
Without letting thoughts of “me ” or ” mine ”
Page 9
Not even the thoughts of one’s own body,
Not the name of the sensations.
No thinking, no reflection.
Know the sensation only as it is.
Until there’s only knowing and sensation,
No body,
No self,
No reflection,
No concept of any kind.
There’s only knowing and sensation.
Page 10
Beyond Sensation
One contemplates on sensation
Knowing it only “as it is ”
Until there’s only sensation and knowing,
There will then come a time
When there’s no sensation,
Only the mindfulness of pure consciousness itself,
There’s no lust, no hate, no ignorance,
That’s when the mind becomes pure,
Clear of self, purged, firm, serviceable.
Page 11
Able to put the mind
Where one wants to be,
Able to take the mind away
From where one doesn’t want to be-
That is called Samadha – Magga ;
The base of which is Rupa.
Knowing — that’s Nama,
Realization of all is Samma-Ditthi-Magga.
The consequence of which will be
The ten stages of Nana or Knowledge,
Leading to Enlightenment;
That’s supreme happiness, peace and freedom,
Known as Nirvana.
Page 12
That’s no small achievement
And so, figuratively speaking
One could say:
Just as a mango tree will come out
If a mango seed is well sown.
The result – the attainment of Enlightenment
Will come of it self,
For that’s only the effect
Of giving one’s attention
To sowing the best seeds
On the best ground,
Under the best possible conditions.
Page 13
Epilogue
For the attainment of Nirvana
With Saddha – resolution.
And Viriya – effort,
Sati and Samadhi- mindfulness and concentration,
As well as knowledge,
May one be able to practice effectively.
