m.CDM, January 31
A court in Chongqing, China, has publicly announced the first-instance verdict in the case involving a criminal gang based in the Kokang region, led by Xu Laofa, also known as Xu Faqi. According to a statement released on the court’s official WeChat account, Xu Laofa was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. The verdict was announced in public on Friday, January 30.
In the same case, Zhang Longlong was sentenced to life imprisonment, while Luo Yujun, Shi Kanzhan, and Liu Xibin were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 14 to 25 years, respectively.
The court also ordered the confiscation of the defendants’ assets and imposed fines.
According to the court’s findings, the gang led by Xu Laofa began operating in the Kokang region in 2019, using its influence and armed core members—including Luo Yujun—to establish multiple online scam operations. The group targeted Chinese nationals and carried out more than 3,400 fraud cases, illegally obtaining over 1.1 billion yuan (approximately USD 150 million).
The court further ruled that the gang used armed force to protect its scam operations and deliberately tortured workers who failed to follow management orders. As a result, one person died and another was injured.
Xu Laofa, Zhang Longlong, Luo Yujun, Shi Kanzhan, and Liu Xibin were convicted of six criminal offenses, including fraud, intentional injury, and drug trafficking, among others.

8. Daik-U Prison authorities punish even those demanding release of long-solitary prisoners, says PPNM
================================
m.CDM, January 31
Prison authorities at Daik-U Prison have punished prisoners who demanded the release of those held in long-term solitary confinement by placing them in solitary as well, resulting in nearly 30 prisoners currently held in isolation, according to the Political Prisoners Network–Myanmar (PPNM).
On July 23, political prisoners demanding the release of long-solitary detainees were denied access to the prison warden and instead punished with solitary confinement.
Some political prisoners—including Moe Moe San, Nway Nway Myint Lwin, and Ju Zin Thi—have reportedly been held in solitary confinement for over three years.
Additionally, ten political prisoners who sang Christmas hymns were also punished with solitary confinement, bringing the total number close to 30.
These prisoners are being held in three women’s cells and four men’s cells. Requests to meet the prison warden have been ignored, and during ICRC visits, prisoners in solitary were reportedly moved to prevent contact.
Due to the winter season, prisoners lack adequate blankets and warm clothing, raising serious health concerns.
PPNM warned that Zin Mar Kyi Aung, a female ward supervisor, bears primary responsibility and called for an immediate end to beatings and unjust isolation.
PPNM urged international organizations and human rights groups to pay attention to ongoing abuses and pressure junta-controlled prison authorities.

Justice For Myanmar (JFM) called on the international community to stand in solidarity with the Myanmar people who are striving to uproot the war-criminal junta and build a federal democratic future.
Despite the junta’s ongoing campaign of terror and violence, the people of Myanmar continue to resist in pursuit of peace, justice, and a federal democratic union.
Five years after the coup attempt, the people continue their resistance with courage, determination, and immense sacrifice, demonstrating their unwavering resolve to dismantle the war-criminal regime.
JFM noted that the junta’s sham elections failed due to domestic and international rejection, while resistance forces continue to achieve victories, leading to the regime’s loss of territorial control.
JFM spokesperson Yadanar Maung emphasized that the junta has failed to break the people’s will and relies solely on violence due to its lack of legitimacy.
She reiterated that the fake election cannot deceive either the Myanmar people or the international community and urged global solidarity as the resistance enters its sixth year.
