The main news stories for today include:
In Mogok Town, artillery shelling by the military council resulted in the death of a Buddhist monk and a woman; police and Pyu Saw Htee militia have been deployed to target and interrogate people who support the resistance.
In Wetlet Township, during military raids, groups of women were gang-raped, injected with contraceptives before being released, and homes were burned down.
Rice assistance distributed to fire-affected civilians in Yinmabin Township.

  1. Monk and woman killed by military artillery shelling in Mogok; resistance supporters targeted
    m.CDM – January 4
    According to local sources, at around 8:00 a.m. on January 4, military council forces fired artillery shells into the Yadanathiri Monastery located in Laye-Oo Ward, eastern Mogok Town, Mandalay Region. As a result, one Buddhist monk passed away, and a woman was killed.
    The monk died instantly when the first artillery shell exploded. A woman who arrived to look into the incident was hit by shrapnel during a second round of shelling and later died.
    After regaining control of Mogok Town, military council forces have reportedly deployed police and Pyu Saw Htee militia and are conducting targeted investigations against people who support the resistance.
  2. Drone bombing attack on military ferry base in Hpapun Township released by Rebel Bees-UAV Force
    m.CDM – January 4
    Rebel Bees-UAV Force released video footage on the evening of January 3 showing a drone bombing attack on a military ferry base in Hpapun Township, Karen State.
    The footage documents coordinated operations with allied forces to seize the base. According to military records, KNLA and allied forces began attacking the ferry base on November 6, 2024, and fully captured it on November 9.
    Weapons, ammunition, and three communication jammers were seized during the operation.
    Rebel Bees-UAV Force stated that its members continue to fight for the liberation of the people, prioritizing public interest above all else. They also confirmed that public support received throughout 2025 was systematically managed without waste, and that they will continue fighting until the terrorist military is defeated.
  3. Women gang-raped and villages burned during military raids in Wetlet Township
    m.CDM – January 4
    In Sagaing Region’s Wetlet Township, a military column of around 150 troops began raiding villages along the Ayeyarwady River in late December, arresting dozens of civilians from villages including Ywar Thit, Indaung, and Min Ywar Taung.
    From January 1 to 3, while temporarily stationed in Ywar Thit Village, troops reportedly gang-raped five detained women. Some victims were persons with intellectual disabilities.
    When the column withdrew, the raped women were injected with contraceptives and released, while six men were taken away. Four houses, kitchens, and cattle sheds used as camps were burned down.
    Similar abuses were reported in Indaung Village, where four women were also gang-raped.
    Due to continued military operations, thousands of civilians from more than 20 villages are currently displaced. Local humanitarian workers report that victims remain too fearful to speak openly about the assaults.
  4. Basic military training graduation held by Pakokku District units and Anyar Ground Forces

    Pakokku District battalions and the Anyar Ground Forces held a joint graduation ceremony for Basic Military Training Course Batch (1/2026) on January 1 at a location within the district.
    Officials from the Pakokku District units, Anyar Ground Forces, allied units, and representatives from education, health, and administrative sectors attended the ceremony.

    The 70-day training was attended by 68 trainees from Pakokku District units, Anyar Ground Forces, BURMA Federal Column-BFC, PI PDF, and Yaung Guerrilla Force.
    The Anyar Ground Forces reaffirmed their commitment to unity, loyalty, integrity, and cooperation with all forces in the struggle for federal democracy and the eradication of dictatorship.
  5. Military column ambushed near Falam; five soldiers killed, two captured
    m.CDM – January 4
    A military council column heading toward Falam Town in Chin State was ambushed near Khuangli Village, resulting in five soldiers killed and two captured alive, according to local sources.
    The attack occurred on the morning of January 3, led by CNA-backed Chinland Council forces together with CNDF joint units.
    Weapons seized included assault rifles, RPGs, mortars, ammunition, and military equipment. Additional clashes on December 29 near the same area resulted in further casualties and weapon seizures.
    Since late October, the military council has launched large-scale offensives to retake Falam, leading to daily clashes with Chin resistance forces.
  6. Rice aid distributed to fire-affected civilians in Yinmabin Township

    On Independence Day, January 4, officials from the Sagaing Federal Unit Interim Government and the Sagaing Forum–Sagaing Public Support Network distributed rice to civilians whose homes were burned down by military forces in Yinmabin Township.
    A total of 150 baskets of rice (approximately 100 sacks) were distributed to 238 households across eight villages, with each household receiving nine pyi of rice.
    Minister U Toe Wai Aung also met with affected civilians and offered words of encouragement.
  7. Travel assistance provided to pardoned prisoners in Monywa Township
    m.CDM – January 4
    In Monywa Township, Sagaing Federal Unit, three prisoners were released under Order No. (1/2026) issued by the National Unity Government President’s Office on January 1, 2026. Travel expenses were also provided.
    The process was carried out by township administrative, judicial, security, and prison officials.
  8. Political prisoners excluded from Independence Day amnesty
    m.CDM – January 4
    On Independence Day, the terrorist military announced sentence reductions and amnesty for 6,134 prisoners convicted of various crimes. However, political prisoners were largely excluded.
    Families gathered outside Insein Prison in hopes of political detainees being released. Only former Information Minister Ye Htut and model Nan Mwe San were among the few publicly known figures released.
  9. U.S. and Australia reaffirm support for the people of Myanmar
    m.CDM – January 4
    The United States and Australia stated that they continue to stand with the people of Myanmar who are striving to build a better future, in statements released to mark Myanmar’s 78th Independence Day.
    U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged the military regime to end violence, release those unjustly detained, allow humanitarian access, and begin dialogue to resolve the conflict peacefully.
    Australia also expressed respect for the courage and resilience of the Myanmar people and reaffirmed its continued support, according to an Australian Embassy statement.
