Today’s headlines are:

## 1) Junta jet fighter bombs a school in Yar Yae village, Indaw Township; 1 schoolgirl killed, 2 seriously injured

According to local military sources, the junta bombed a school in **Yar Yae village** in the **Mawlu area of Indaw Township, Sagaing Region**, using a **jet fighter** at around **1:15 a.m. on January 2**.
About **five minutes after the first strike**—around **1:20 a.m.**—the jet fighter reportedly circled back and carried out a **second bombing**.
As a result of the attacks, a **16-year-old schoolgirl** from **Taung Phi Lar village**, who had been staying at the school to study, was killed. **Two other schoolgirls** were **seriously injured**. The students were reported to be enrolled and studying at the school.

## 2) Administrative offices in Sinphyukyun torched; junta checkpoint and convoy attacked

The NUG Ministry of Defence’s People’s Defence Force (PDF), Magway Regional Military Command, released **Military Situation Update (2)** on **January 2**.
The statement said that starting **December 23, 2025**, district commands, battalions/units, and People’s Defence Teams (Pa Ka Pha), together with allied forces, conducted continuous attacks against junta bases.
* **December 24:** A junta checkpoint in **Thanzalun village, Seikphyu Township** was raided under the command of the **Pakokku District Military Command**. **Three junta personnel** were reported killed, and the checkpoint was seized.
* **December 30:** A **four-vehicle convoy** carrying about **35 personnel** departing Seikphyu Township was ambushed, also under the Pakokku District command. The statement claimed **16 junta personnel were killed** and **one captive** was taken. Two vehicles were damaged, and **eight weapons** plus ammunition were seized.
* **January 1:** In **Sinphyukyun town, Salin Township**, resistance forces raided and **burned down offices** described as junta “supporting pillars,” including the **General Administration Department office**, under the command of the **Minbu District Military Command**.
The Ministry of Defence said it is intensifying operations against the junta and appealed to the public to support as they are able.

## 3) Two killed, including a junta officer, after fleeing a PDF checkpoint without inspection
**m.CDM – January 2**
In **Magway Region**, on the old **Natmauk–Pyawbwe road**, two people—**including a junta officer**—were reported killed after they drove through a PDF checkpoint **without stopping for inspection**, according to a statement by **Natmauk Pa Ka Pha**.
At around **7:00 a.m. on January 2**, while the Natmauk Pa Ka Pha was conducting checks, a **Toyota Hilux Surf (9D-3960)** coming from the **Saikoung** direction allegedly refused inspection and fled. Three junta personnel were reportedly in the vehicle. PDF members pursued and fired, and **one officer** and **one other-rank** were said to have died.
The remaining junta member reportedly escaped by **carjacking a civilian vehicle at gunpoint** and fled toward **Mon village**. The statement also said they seized **two MA-3 rifles**, **eight magazines**, and **200 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition** from the junta vehicle.

## 4) Resistance controls most of Katha; LIB (309) surrounded; nearly all residents displaced

On the **7th day** of the **Katha town-capture battle** in **Sagaing Region** (as of **January 2**), ground sources said joint resistance forces—**including KIA-led units**—control **nearly three-quarters** of the town and have surrounded the junta’s fixed base, **Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 309**.
Fighting remains intense. The junta is reportedly carrying out **daily attacks** using **airstrikes, artillery, and drones**.
Katha has **10 wards** and **143 villages**. Sources said the junta can hold only some wards in the town itself, while resistance forces have controlled **nearly all surrounding villages since 2023**.
Key areas of fighting were reported to include: **Thaphan Kone village**, **Katha Main Market**, **Police Station No. (1)**, the **prison** (reportedly holding about **900 prisoners**), **High School (1) and (2)**, the **400-meter sports field**, the **district combined office**, **Wards (5) and (8)**, **Ward (10)**, and **LIB (309)**.
Resistance forces reportedly penetrated most of the town, including entry gates and **four posts**, and have blocked enemy movement routes.
Sources said the junta has continued airstrikes, including reportedly dropping **more than 50 bombs on the night of January 1**. On **January 2**, an airstrike in **Hae Nar village, Moetar Lay sub-township** reportedly killed **one civilian** and injured **three**.
Fires reportedly damaged sites including the **Ruby Market**, **High School (2)**, and **Zedi Kone Monastery**.
Most residents have reportedly fled toward **Nabar, Mohnyin, Shwegu, Mawlu, Meza, Myitkyina, and Mandalay**. Some people are said to be trapped along displacement routes, and sources claim the junta has been **attacking displacement routes from the air**.
Sources also said some non-CDM government staff are among those fleeing; some were reportedly detained while attempting to escape disguised as displaced civilians. It was also alleged that non-CDM staff and family members sheltering inside LIB (309) have been armed and forced to fight.

## 5) NUG and Mandalay Regional Interim Administrative Council meet for discussions

The NUG announced that it held talks with the **Mandalay Regional Interim Administrative Council** on **December 28** in a location within a liberated area.
Attendees from the NUG side included:
* **Dr. Zaw Wai Soe**, Union Minister (Prime Minister’s Office)
* **U Yi Mon**, Union Minister (Ministry of Defence)
* **U Kyaw Ni**, Deputy Union Minister (Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration)
along with staff members. From the Mandalay Council, the **Chair**, **Vice-Chair**, and other members attended.
The meeting discussed the **Division of Competency** (allocation of authority/responsibilities). The two sides reportedly reached certain agreements, which will be submitted to the NUG cabinet for further action.
They also exchanged views on ensuring proper collection of due taxes from **natural resource businesses** in Mandalay’s liberated areas where tax revenues have not yet been collected, and on next steps to accelerate revolutionary success.

## 6) Travel assistance provided to 43 amnesty recipients from Indaw and Kyunhla
**m.CDM – January 2**
The NUG Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration (MOHAI) said it provided **travel support** to **43 prisoners** from **Indaw** and **Kyunhla** who were granted amnesty under an order issued by the NUG President’s Office.
On **January 1**, the NUG granted amnesty to **110 prisoners** nationwide and also reduced remaining sentences for others by **one-third**. Among those granted amnesty, **19** were from Indaw Township and **24** from Kyunhla Township. They reportedly received amnesty certificates and travel assistance.

## 7) Revolutionary queer groups urge publication of case progress and swift justice in the “Ma Kyi Pyar” complaint

Four revolutionary queer groups urged the NUG to publish an update on the status and completion of investigations into allegations against **Permanent Secretary Ma Kyi Pyar** and her husband, and to deliver justice as quickly as possible.
They said complaints had been filed requesting action for alleged **human rights violations**, **abuse of power and corruption**, **workplace sexual harassment**, misconduct toward staff, and alleged **undue influence/manipulation** within the revolutionary government.
They stated that on **November 22**, the NUG formed an investigation team including **five cabinet members**, and that the NUG publicly committed to completing the process within **one month** and to uncovering truth and justice.
However, they said that from the date the complaints were first filed up to today, the NUG has not publicly released findings, progress updates, or resolutions.
They therefore called on the NUG to:
1. Officially guarantee that complainants and witnesses will not face threats, pressure, or retaliation;
2. Include civil society organizations and independent experts—beyond NUG officials—within the investigation mechanism to build public trust;
3. Regularly publish investigation progress and timelines, and deliver justice as soon as possible.
The joint statement was issued by **Myanmar Rainbow Political Community (MRPC)**, **Queers of Burma Alternative (QBA)**, **Spectrum Alliance of Gender Equity (SAGE)**, and **Asia Youths Association (AYA)**.
