The main news stories for today are as follows:
In Tada-U, Pakokku, Shwebo, Wuntho, and Wetlet townships, junta forces raided villages and carried out intense airstrikes, killing more than 10 civilians including a Buddhist monk, and burning down hundreds of houses.
Under the “Successful Sittaung River Basin Operation,” resistance forces attacked 14 junta camps, temporarily seized Tawkyain Inn town, and killed at least 50 junta soldiers.
In Hkler Lwee Htoo District, junta violence killed two civilians and injured others.
In Pale Township, NUG-affiliated forces raided two BNRA checkpoints and seized 10 weapons.
The National Unity Government (NUG) announced that it officially represents Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and rejected the junta’s claim to representation.
Two forcibly conscripted junta soldiers defected with weapons in Yedashe and Myaing townships.
Mon State Federal Council forces conducted surprise security inspections along Union Highway No. 8.
Facebook removed over 1,000 pages, groups, and accounts linked to junta-controlled Mytel.

- Junta Raids and Airstrikes Kill Civilians, Destroy Villages Across Multiple Townships

In Tada-U Township, junta troops raided Sapadin Village in the early morning of January 7, killing one Buddhist monk by burning and shooting one civilian dead, according to local sources.
A total of 73 houses were burned down, completely destroying the village.
A 50-year-old man, U Nyunt Aung, was shot dead after failing to escape. A monk aged over 70, who was in poor health, was dragged from a vehicle and burned alive.
Similarly, on January 8, junta forces raided Kan Yat Gyi Village in Pakokku Township, burning down more than 200 houses.
In Shwebo Township, an airstrike targeting forest shelters near Ywar Soe Village, where displaced civilians were staying, killed four people including one woman, and injured more than ten others.
In Wuntho Township, two jet fighters dropped five bombs on Namkham area on January 8 at around 7:38 PM, killing a 58-year-old woman, Daw Thaung Yin, and burning one house.
In eastern Wetlet Township, a Y-12 aircraft dropped 54 bombs near Thit Seint Village, burning at least four houses. - Resistance Forces Kill Over 50 Junta Troops in Sittaung River Basin Operation

Military Region No. (2), Bago Regional Command, announced that resistance forces carried out a coordinated offensive named the “Successful Sittaung River Basin Operation”, attacking 14 junta camps along the old Yangon–Mandalay highway on the morning of January 9.
Camps attacked included those in Tawkyain Inn (Aungmyin Town), Oktwin Township, Nyaung Chay Htauk, Kywe Pwe Kyar, Sithansa Village, and a railway bridge camp in Kyaukkyi Township.
At least 50 junta soldiers were killed, many others wounded, and a large cache of weapons and ammunition was seized.
Resistance forces temporarily seized Tawkyain Inn town, burned junta administrative buildings, the election commission office, and the police station, and freed eight civilians illegally detained by the junta.
The operation was jointly carried out by multiple resistance battalions under Strategic Commands 23, 24, 25, and 26, local People’s Defense Forces, and KNLA Battalion (9).
Some resistance fighters were injured during the operation. Authorities warned civilians to avoid junta camps and remain alert as military operations continue. - Two Civilians Killed by Junta Violence in Hkler Lwee Htoo District

The Karen National Union (KNU) reported that junta attacks in Saw Htee and Ledo townships, Hkler Lwee Htoo District, resulted in two civilian deaths and two injuries.
On January 2, a drone strike on Wai Kyun Village killed 43-year-old Ma Kay Thwe Tun and injured 64-year-old U Aye Kyaw, destroying one house.
On January 7, a drone strike injured 50-year-old Daw Thein Thi in Middle Village, Ledo Township.
Later that morning, a 120mm artillery shell fired from Shwe Wah Battalion landed in Zayat Khin Village, killing 35-year-old U Aung Ko Hla and damaging homes and shops. - NUG Forces Raid BNRA Checkpoints in Pale Township

In Pale Township, Sagaing Region, NUG-affiliated forces raided two illegal BNRA checkpoints operated under Bo Nagar, seizing 10 weapons, according to the Pale Township People’s Administration.
The checkpoints were located on roads near Chin Pate Village, Ma Yoe Tone Village, and Poppar Village.
BNRA had reportedly been extorting money from civilians since December.
No arrests or gunfire occurred. The checkpoints were dismantled, and BNRA members were warned not to continue illegal taxation. - NUG Reaffirms Sole Representation of Myanmar at ICJ

The National Unity Government (NUG) announced that hearings in the genocide case filed by The Gambia against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will resume on January 13.
NUG reaffirmed that it is the only legitimate representative of Myanmar, stating that the junta lacks UN recognition and public support and therefore has no right to represent the country at the ICJ.
NUG acknowledged past failures that led to atrocities against the Rohingya, Rakhine, and other minorities and pledged constitutional reforms to prevent future crimes and ensure peaceful coexistence. - Two Junta Soldiers Defect with Weapons

Two forcibly conscripted junta soldiers defected with weapons in Yedashe Township (Bago Region) and Myaing Township (Magway Region).
One soldier defected with two rifles, magazines, and 85 rounds of ammunition and was rewarded and safely relocated.
Another soldier defected with 130 rounds of ammunition, grenades, landmines, and magazines, received humane treatment, a 2 million kyat reward, and assistance to reunite with family. - Surprise Security Inspections on Union Highway No. 8

The Mon State Federal Council (MSFC) conducted surprise inspections along Union Highway No. 8 (Ye–Thanbyuzayat road) with MSRF, YPDF, and Ramanya Police Force.
Vehicles and motorcycles were checked for documents and security threats. Civilians were advised to follow traffic regulations and report suspicious activity. - Facebook Removes Over 1,000 Mytel-Linked Accounts

Justice For Myanmar (JFM) announced that Facebook removed over 1,000 pages, groups, and accounts linked to junta-controlled telecom operator Mytel.
The removals align with Meta’s policy banning junta-linked businesses since 2021.
Mytel is jointly owned by Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), Viettel Global, and local cronies.
JFM estimates the junta could earn up to USD 270 million in profits from Mytel within 5–9 years, with an additional USD 450 million over the following five years.
