5. UN IIMM requests information on junta airstrike on Kyaukphyu Public Hospital
m.CDM – December 13
The UN Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has requested information related to the junta’s airstrike on Kyaukphyu District Public Hospital in Mrauk-U, Rakhine State.
The 300-bed hospital, filled with patients at the time, was bombed by the junta on December 10, killing at least 30 people and injuring around 70.
Under international law, hospitals and medical facilities are protected civilian sites and must not be attacked. The protection extends to patients, medical staff, and all others present. The IIMM warned that deliberately targeting protected persons or facilities—or attacking without distinction—constitutes a violation of international law and may amount to a war crime.
The Mrauk-U hospital attack is considered one of the deadliest airstrikes on a healthcare facility since the junta’s 2021 coup.
The IIMM is calling for testimony and evidence from survivors, patients, caregivers, healthcare workers, witnesses, and organizations. They are seeking casualty lists, photos, videos, drone footage, and documentation showing damage to the hospital and surrounding structures.
6. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq: Airstrike on Rakhine hospital shows worsening conditions for Myanmar civilians
m.CDM – December 13
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that the junta’s airstrike on a hospital in Rakhine State clearly demonstrates that the situation facing Myanmar’s civilians continues to deteriorate.
Speaking at the UN noon briefing on December 12, Haq emphasized that recent events—including the hospital bombing—highlight the escalating dangers confronting the population.
He reiterated the UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ call for an immediate end to the junta’s violence and human rights abuses since the 2021 coup.
Haq also noted serious concerns about the junta’s plan to hold elections amid widespread violence and repression, stressing that people cannot freely exercise political rights in such circumstances.
7. KNU strongly condemns Mrauk-U hospital airstrike as a war crime
m.CDM – December 13
The KNU issued a statement strongly condemning the junta’s December 10 airstrike on Mrauk-U Public Hospital, which killed 34 civilians and injured more than 60.
The KNU said targeting essential civilian infrastructure such as a public hospital constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and should be classified as a war crime against innocent civilians.
The statement also noted that on the same day as the hospital attack, junta air and artillery strikes in Kawthoolei territory killed two civilians and destroyed homes and civilian property.
The KNU urged the international community to take effective action to halt the junta’s atrocities and to ensure accountability. It also called for urgent protections and justice for affected civilians.
