📌📌 1. Discussion on the Situation in Myanmar Held at the UN Third Committee
A meeting on the human rights situation in Myanmar was held on the afternoon of October 28 at the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Affairs Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly, according to reports.
During the meeting, Ms. Julie Bishop, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, addressed the session via recorded video. Mr. Nicholas Koumjian, Head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), and Mr. Thomas Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar, attended in person to discuss and present their reports.
Following their presentations, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted that since the military coup of February 2021, the junta has continued to escalate its atrocities against civilians for nearly five years. He pointed out that the junta had carried out increasing airstrikes and heavy artillery attacks on civilian areas, including schools, hospitals, and religious sites.
He noted that in 2025, the number of airstrikes had doubled compared to 2024. Evidence gathered by the IIMM revealed widespread atrocities such as civilian killings, electric shocks and strangulation during interrogations at detention centers, and sexual violence.
According to UN reports, there are over 3.6 million displaced persons and 22 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, including 6.9 million children and 10.4 million women. Despite the March 2025 earthquake, which killed more than 3,800 people and destroyed over 55,000 homes, the junta continued its bombing campaigns.
Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun further stated that Myanmar has become a hub for transnational crimes, noting that large-scale online scam centers have been established in junta-controlled territories of Karen and Shan States. Around 100,000 trafficked individuals, mostly young people, are being forced to operate these scams, generating an estimated USD 40 billion annually in illicit profits.
He strongly rejected the junta’s planned election, calling it “entirely illegitimate and a political trap.” He emphasized that a military group which unlawfully removed a democratically elected government has no right to hold elections, especially while political leaders remain imprisoned and the junta controls less than 30% of the country’s territory.
The ambassador urged the international community to cut off the flow of weapons, aviation fuel, and dual-use goods to the junta; to issue an ICC arrest warrant for Min Aung Hlaing; to immediately release all political prisoners; and to fully implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus.
He concluded by stating that the people of Myanmar rely on the united support of the international community for genuine peace, dignity, and a democratic transition. Only the collective political will and genuine humanitarian commitment of member states, he said, can safeguard the lives, homes, and future of the Myanmar people.

📌📌 2. Chinland Council Firmly Opposes the Junta’s Election
The Chinland Council issued a statement on October 29, firmly opposing the election being organized by the military junta, describing it as a “sham election.”
According to the statement, the junta is preparing to hold Phase One of its election on December 28, based on the 2008 Constitution, with the intent of prolonging its military dictatorship. The preparations reportedly include compiling voter lists, training officials with electronic voting machines, and arranging advance voting for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The statement also alleged that the junta is amending election laws to deceive the international community, ASEAN, and neighboring countries.
The Chinland Council warned that such an election would exacerbate political conflict and urged the international community not to recognize or support it.
The statement further called on non-CDM civil servants in Chin State not to participate in the election, and urged Chin people to reject any coercion or threats to force them to vote.
