📌📌 1. Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Miyaji Receives Request Supporting Myanmar’s Democratic Transition

October 2

It is reported that Japan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Miyaji has received a request from the Japan Parliamentary League concerning support for Myanmar’s democratic transition.

According to a press release issued in October by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister Miyaji formally accepted a petition from the Myanmar Parliamentary Representatives’ Association for Democracy, which seeks to support Myanmar’s democratic movement.

Daw Naw Ohnmar from the NUG Representative Office in Japan explained:

“Essentially, this was a petition jointly submitted by both the Japan Parliamentary League members and the GIREN parliamentarians to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The letter called on the Japanese government and members of parliament to absolutely reject the sham election that the terrorist junta intends to stage, and to demand the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. This petition, signed by Myanmar nationals living in Japan, was officially handed over to the Upper House Speaker, Mr. Kondo Soichi.”

On September 30, during the annual convention of the Association of Parliamentarians Supporting Myanmar’s Democracy, Japan-based representatives of the National Unity Government (NUG) including U Saw Bla Hla Thein, along with representatives of Myanmar community organizations in Japan, attended and appealed for continued support for Myanmar’s struggle.

📌📌 2. Ko Htein Lin Urges Support to Protect Media Seeking Justice

October 2

Ko Htein Lin, son of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, called on October 2 to help ensure that media outlets striving for justice are not silenced or made to disappear.

He said:

“The T-shirt I am wearing today belonged to my elder brother around 1990. Back then, my brother and I could only hear about my mother through the free and independent press. Most of my mother’s life was spent under the military’s arrests and detentions, and we were cut off from her. Whether she was doing well or not, we learned only through the media. That remains true today, only worse. No matter how much they try to suppress or silence the news, the media continues to reveal the truth. That is why these media outlets must be protected from disappearing. We must all help—for my mother, for all political prisoners, and for the people of Myanmar—so that the truth can continue to be uncovered.”

Between February 2021 and January 2025, a total of 7 journalists were killed due to arrest, torture, and executions by the junta.
In nearly four years since the coup, over 200 journalists have been arrested, and at any given time, between 30 and 60 journalists remain imprisoned across various jails in the country.
