📌📌 1. UN Myanmar Ambassador Says Rohingya Repatriation Unlikely Amid Ongoing Airstrikes Across Myanmar, Including Rakhine
October 1
Due to ongoing airstrikes and bombings by the Myanmar military across the country, including in Rakhine State, the prospect for the Rohingya to safely and voluntarily return to their places of origin with dignity is not possible in the near future, said U Kyaw Moe Tun, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
He made these remarks at a high-level conference panel on the situation of minorities, including the Rohingya Muslims and other ethnic groups in Myanmar.
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun explained that the challenges faced by Rohingya refugees currently residing in host countries, including those neighboring Myanmar, remain highly complex and multifaceted. He added that displacement continues to worsen since the mass exodus, with no improvement in sight.
He expressed Myanmar’s gratitude to host countries for sheltering these refugees and further acknowledged their efforts to improve the livelihoods of Rohingya refugees, including access to healthcare, education, and job opportunities.
He emphasized that to resolve this crisis, effective and urgent international support is necessary for both Myanmar and the host countries.
However, given the current situation where the military continues indiscriminate airstrikes and bombings across Myanmar, including in Rakhine State, there is no realistic possibility in the short term for the Rohingya to return to their homeland safely, voluntarily, and with dignity, he reiterated.
Citing reports from the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar and the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), he noted that Myanmar’s human rights situation remains dire.
He stressed that this crisis stems from the military’s unlawful coup in February 2021, which destroyed Myanmar’s peace and security. Therefore, the military is the primary perpetrator and responsible party, he said.
He urged that in order to create an environment conducive to the repatriation of displaced persons, including the Rohingya, the atrocities and brutalities being committed by the military regime against civilians must end, while also doubling efforts to build trust, solidarity, and unity among the people.
