🚩🚩 1. Speech by Acting President Duwa Lashi La of the National Unity Government at the International Democracy Day Ceremony
September 15, 2025
Today, on the occasion of International Democracy Day, which is being organized by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), I first extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to the Chairperson and Members of Parliament of the CRPH, the Union Prime Minister and Union Ministers of the National Unity Government (NUG), representatives of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), officials of the Ta’ang National Party, invited guests, and revolutionary allies who are in attendance.
I would also like to express my particular delight and pride that today’s International Democracy Day ceremony is hosted by the CRPH.
When we look back at our country’s past history, it is clear that the struggles for democracy have always been directly linked to the resistance against military dictatorship. Today as well, our Spring Revolution is a people’s revolution that is fighting to dismantle military dictatorship for the sake of democracy. This Spring Revolution is not only for democracy, but also for federalism, as the people are fighting for both causes together. The ongoing process we are traversing is about dismantling military dictatorship and establishing a Federal Democracy system in its place. Unless we can completely eradicate military dictatorship, we cannot fully secure democratic rights.
Democracy is grounded in freedom and justice, but also in accountability and responsibility. It is inseparably tied to equality and the full enjoyment of human rights. So long as military dictatorship persists, people’s freedoms will remain extinguished. As long as it exists, the people will be denied justice, equality, and human rights. This is why the flourishing of democracy is inseparably bound to the dismantling of military dictatorship.
It is therefore evident that without decisively eradicating military dictatorship, we cannot hope to establish a functioning democratic system. At present, the terrorist military council is attempting to prolong its survival under various pretexts and disguises, including by organizing sham elections. The junta is trying to equate a false, manipulated election with a genuine, free, and fair democratic election. Some domestic groups, although aware of the sham nature of this election, still hope it might serve as some kind of starting point toward solutions. But it remains unclear whether such expectations serve the people’s democratic rights, or whether they are simply prolonging and legitimizing military dictatorship. I wish to state clearly that we firmly oppose any political maneuver intended to deceive the people.
The junta’s sham election is not a political outlet for the people—it is merely a political exit route for the military dictatorship’s leaders. The longer the military dictatorship breathes, the more suffocated the people become. Our National Unity Government is striving for the genuine flourishing of democracy and the genuine guarantee of people’s freedoms. In these efforts, we are employing both political means—including armed resistance and diplomatic channels—integrated together.
Ensuring the genuine functioning of democratic frameworks and building strong democratic institutions across the country and society is the nation-building process of our country. And it must be understood clearly that true nation-building cannot be achieved without a successful revolution. Because revolution and nation-building are inseparable, I must stress that it is vital for us to successfully overthrow military dictatorship and firmly establish a democratic system.
In conclusion, let me emphasize this: the Spring Revolution is not a revolution that seeks only a shortcut through temporary compromises. It is a revolution that is fighting to successfully establish both a Federal system and a democratic system. Along this journey, we are traversing rough terrains, navigating sharp turns, and overcoming storms and cliffs of political challenges. The year 2025 can be defined as a year in which we face even more intense political storms. Yet, our Spring Revolution continues to climb toward its goal without hesitation, despite highs and lows. While there may be adjustments in strategies and shifts in tactics, we have never—and will never—abandon our original objectives and destination.
The Spring Revolution continues to advance step by step, sometimes moving forward, sometimes taking a step back, but always pressing onward. Therefore, I conclude by urging everyone to maintain their revolutionary spirit and political resilience so that we can continue to march and fight without being hindered by obstacles.
The revolution must be won without fail.
