🚩🚩 1. KNU: Sexual Violence Strictly Prohibited in All Areas Under Its Authority; Committed to Eliminating Gender Discrimination
September 2
According to a declaration made by the Karen National Union (KNU), sexual violence is strictly prohibited in all areas under its administrative and military authority, and efforts will be made to eliminate gender-based discrimination.
On September 1, the KNU announced an updated directive reaffirming and implementing its commitment to the Prohibition of Sexual Violence and Elimination of Gender Discrimination. A press briefing was held on the same day at a location along the Thai–Kawthoolei border, where KNU officials explained the policy.
At the event, Padoh Saw Tonyi, a member of the KNU Central Executive Committee and spokesperson, presented the main points of the directive. Journalists from various media outlets attended, and in the second part of the program, they were given the opportunity to ask questions.
Padoh Saw Tonyi stated that the announcement is divided into three stages: first, a public release to the people; second, a release directed at the armed forces; and finally, dissemination to all administrative departments and officials.
The KNU first signed its Commitment to Prohibit Sexual Violence and Eliminate Gender Discrimination with the Geneva Call organization on July 21, 2013.

🚩🚩 2. KNU Orders All KNLA Commanders and Soldiers to Strictly Comply with Prohibition of Sexual Violence and Gender Discrimination
September 2
The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), under the KNU, has instructed all of its commanders and soldiers to strictly comply with the commitments on prohibiting sexual violence and eliminating gender discrimination.
This follows the September 1 directive issued by the KNU, reaffirming and implementing its earlier commitment made with Geneva Call in 2013.
According to KNU officials, this reflects the organization’s pledge to uphold humanitarian standards and justice and serves as both a serious reminder and binding directive.
The directive contains eight rules that must be fully observed and implemented. Compliance is mandatory not only for commanders and soldiers, but also for civil administrative staff working under the KNU.
The KNU warned that those who violate these orders will face accountability under KNU procedures, and may also face serious consequences in line with international human rights standards.
