📌📌 2. The Military’s Election Is Not for Democracy but to Perpetuate Its Power, Says APHR Chairperson

Mercy Chriesty Barends, Chairperson of ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), stated on September 15, 2025, during the International Day of Democracy event, that the so-called election to be organized by Myanmar’s military is not intended to achieve democracy, but merely to prolong their hold on power.

Speaking at the event held online, Chairperson Barends highlighted that the actions of Myanmar’s coup military have destroyed democracy and unleashed brutal violence against the people.

“The election the military talks about is completely illegitimate. In a time when military rule dominates, political freedoms are repressed, and basic liberties are denied, no election can ever be free and fair,” she said.

She further recalled that the unlawful coup staged by the military in February 2021 destroyed democratic institutions, led to mass killings, and displaced millions into homelessness.

Elected representatives, she added, were either imprisoned or forced into exile to escape persecution.

Despite such oppression, Barends praised the extraordinary courage and dignity of the Myanmar people in continuing their revolution. She underscored the urgent need to fully guarantee freedoms of expression, assembly, and association, as well as to immediately release all political prisoners.

She also stressed the importance of ensuring an inclusive peace process that places women, youth, ethnic minorities, and marginalized communities at its center.

“Democracy cannot exclude people. It cannot rely on threats. It cannot be built on fear,” she emphasized.

APHR reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Myanmar, rejected the sham elections staged by the military, and called on the international community to cut financial flows to the junta while providing humanitarian aid to those in need.

“The struggle of the people of Myanmar is our struggle. Their hopes are our hopes. If we work together, democracy will be restored and strengthened in Myanmar,” APHR Chairperson Mercy Chriesty Barends concluded.

📌📌 3. Multi-Ethnic Councils and Federal Units Reject the Military Junta’s Illegal and Sham Election

Multi-Ethnic Councils (MEC) and Federal Unit organizations have issued a joint statement rejecting the unlawful and sham election planned by the coup military.

MEC affirmed its commitment to building a future Federal Democratic Union through a “bottom-up federalism approach,” transitioning from centralized authoritarian and military dictatorship that has dominated for about 80 years, toward a modern system of representation, responsibility, and accountability.

The coup military has announced that on December 28, it will begin holding an unlawful sham election designed solely to extend the lifespan of its dictatorship. MEC pointed out that such an election blatantly violates ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and directly opposes the will of the ethnic peoples.

According to MEC, the sham election cannot realize the federal union aspired to by ethnic revolutionary forces and Federal Units. Instead, it risks perpetuating Myanmar’s political conflicts, undermining democracy, human rights, equality, and self-determination.

In line with their vision to establish a future Federal Democratic Union, the MEC and Federal Unit organizations are working toward the emergence of a Transitional Federal Democratic Government (TFDG), drafting the Articles of Federal Transitional Arrangement (AFTA) as part of the transitional process.

Therefore, the MEC and Federal Units declared that they will never politically recognize the unlawful sham election organized by the coup military. They also urged the international community not to recognize or cooperate with it.

The joint statement was signed by:

  • Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP)
  • Karen National Union (KNU)
  • Chin National Front (CNF)
  • New Mon State Party (Anti-Dictatorship) – NMSP (AD)
  • Ta’ang Liberation Council (TLC)
  • Pa-O National Federal Council (PNFC)
  • Mon State Federal Council (MSFC)
  • Karenni State Consultative Council (KSCC)
  • Women’s League of Burma (WLB)
  • Lahu Democratic Union (LDU)
  • Sagaing Federal Unit Revolutionary Forces
  • Organization for Federal Mandalay Political Progress (OFMPP).

📌📌 4. Who Can Trust a Terrorist Military That Offers “Peace” with Bloodstained Hands? – KNU

September 21
Radio NUG

Although the coup military in Myanmar continues to announce that peace talks are being held nationwide, in reality, human rights violations are still being committed across the country, including in the Kawthoolei administrative areas of the Karen National Union (KNU).

The KNU Human Rights Committee issued a statement on September 21, International Day of Peace, exposing these violations.

Between January and August 2025, the coup military carried out no fewer than 1,277 acts of violence in Kawthoolei territory alone, including airstrikes, heavy artillery shelling, and drone attacks. These assaults resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians, the destruction of homes, schools, hospitals, and religious buildings, and the displacement of thousands of people.

The statement emphasized that genuine peace requires the cessation of violence, pointing out that the actions of the military are entirely inconsistent with its public claims of pursuing peace.

On International Day of Peace, the KNU called for an end to violence and respect for human rights under the theme “Let’s Start Working for World Peace Now.” It also asked, “Who can believe in or accept a peace offering extended with bloodstained hands?”

The KNU further stressed that achieving lasting peace requires recognition of equality, the right to self-determination, and the political rights of ethnic nationalities.

It also declared that the KNU will continue to collaborate with the international community, stakeholders in Myanmar, and all who value peace, to build a future of freedom, federalism, and harmony.
