📌📌 6. ASEAN Parliamentarians Condemn Myanmar Military’s School Attack, Call for Urgent ASEAN Intervention
September 15
Radio NUG
The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), consisting of parliamentarians from across Southeast Asia, issued a statement strongly condemning the Myanmar military’s airstrike on Pannya Pyoe Khin Private High School in Thayet Ta Pin Village, Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State.
The statement noted that during an August 25 airstrike in Mrauk-U, at least 15 people were killed, including children and students, while 18 others were injured. It also highlighted that Rakhine civilians live in constant fear due to daily aerial bombings.
“This is a deliberate act of terror targeting children and families. By bombing schools and homes, the military is showing complete disregard for human lives and international law,” said Mercy Chriesty Barends, Chairperson of APHR and Member of the Indonesian Parliament.
“As parliamentarians from ASEAN, we cannot allow our governments to silently watch as the Myanmar military continues attacking civilians with impunity. Urgent international action is needed to protect the people of Myanmar and safeguard democracy,” she added.
Charles Santiago, APHR Co-Chair and former Malaysian MP, stated:
“ASEAN must stop shielding the Myanmar military with weak statements and instead fully support Myanmar’s democratic forces.”
APHR stressed that the repeated attacks on schools, homes, and other civilian structures constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and amount to war crimes.
The group called for:
- An immediate halt to airstrikes and military attacks on civilians,
- Full, unhindered humanitarian access to conflict-affected regions,
- Prosecution of perpetrators through the International Criminal Court (ICC),
- A global arms embargo, and
- Strict control of aviation fuel supplies to prevent further airstrikes.
“ASEAN cannot remain silent. Our governments have a responsibility to protect civilians and to stand for the human rights and democracy of the Myanmar people,” said Rangsiman Rome, APHR Board Member and Member of the Thai Parliament.
APHR further warned:
“This massacre is not only a reminder of the junta’s impunity but also a direct challenge to ASEAN’s credibility. Failure to take decisive action would send a dangerous message of tolerance for authoritarian violence in the region.”
These reports were submitted by Radio NUG correspondents Khur Shel and Padeh Phoe.
