September 8 โ€” Radio NUG

On September 8, the National Unity Government (NUG) announced its call for the United Nations, ASEAN, neighboring countries, and the international community to promptly take effective measures to exert pressure on the brutal military junta for the swift and healthy release of all political prisoners, including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The NUG expressed its deep concern upon learning, through a statement from her son, Ko Htein Lin (a.k.a. Kim Aris), that State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who is unlawfully detained by the violent military regime, is suffering from a worrying heart condition and has not been receiving adequate medical treatment.

The NUG warned that the denial of urgently needed effective medical care for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi constitutes a deliberate political threat to her life. It stressed that the military junta will be held fully responsible for any consequences arising from this act.

๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ 4. One Political Prisoner Dies and Others Face Life-Threatening Abuse After Beatings and Solitary Confinement in Hpa-an Prison

September 8 โ€” Radio NUG

The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) announced that prison authorities in Hpa-an Prison, Karen State, have been committing unlawful torture, beatings, solitary confinement, and life-threatening abuse against political prisoners.

On June 14, 2025, twelve political prisoners from Kyauk Kyar Ward in Hpa-an Prison were forcibly taken by prison authorities, beaten, kicked, stomped on, and then placed in solitary confinement with a three-month punishment.

The prisoners were beaten both while being taken to the punishment cells and again inside the solitary confinement area. As a result of this unlawful torture, political prisoner Ko Nyan Min Tun died on July 13, while others placed in solitary confinement also suffered serious injuries.

Prison authorities designated Ko Zaw Win Aung (a.k.a. Ko Jet Ko) as the ringleader among the twelve prisoners and subjected him to daily beatings for more than a month. Reports state that this has left him in an extremely severe condition, physically and mentally, to the point of contemplating suicide.

Furthermore, Officer Aung Ye Naing (a.k.a. Rakhine), prison staff member (National Registration Card No. 11/STN(N)069393), is said to have organized a group called โ€œMain Jail Office,โ€ consisting of convicted military officers and drug dealers serving prison terms. The group, who tattoo red stars on their chests, reportedly received instructions from Officer Aung Ye Naing to beat political prisoners, with names of targets written on wooden sticks.

In addition, Officer Aung Ye Naing (a.k.a. Rakhine) reportedly threatened that if information about the abuse leaked from Hpa-an Prison, the twelve political prisoners in solitary confinement would all be killed. PPNM stated that witnesses confirm these threats.

Currently, political prisoners in Hpa-an Prison are subjected to systematic torture by prison authorities. Every day, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., regardless of whether it is sunny or raining, they are forced to fight one another between cell blocks. Prison staff also threaten that anyone who speaks out against them will be beaten, stomped on, or placed in solitary confinement.

Therefore, PPNM issued the following demands regarding the ongoing physical and psychological torture and threats to life faced by political prisoners in Hpa-an Prison:

  1. Immediately release the twelve political prisoners from unlawful solitary confinement and cease the punishments of beatings, stomping, and isolation.
  2. Provide immediate medical treatment and psychological support to Ko Zaw Win Aung and all other political prisoners who have suffered torture and beatings.
  3. Hold accountable Officer Aung Ye Naing (a.k.a. Rakhine) and others who ordered and facilitated torture, and immediately end all unlawful abuse of political prisoners.
  4. Ensure that prison authorities do not commit any further acts of life-threatening abuse against political prisoners in Hpa-an Prison by any means.
