Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, sent an emergency letter on August 29 to UN Secretary-General H.E. Mr. António Guterres regarding the grave situation in Myanmar, according to reports.

The letter included the latest situation updates in Myanmar up to August 15, and was also shared with H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Ms. Annalena Baerbock, President-elect of the 80th Session, as well as with other permanent representatives and observers to the UN.

According to the Ambassador’s data:

  • Since the coup on February 1, 20217,066 civilians have been killed and 29,549 people arbitrarily arrested by the military junta.
  • Airstrikes have sharply increased from 346 attacks before the Noto earthquake to 536 afterward. In the three months following the earthquake, more than 750 civilians were killed and over 1,400 injured.
  • Since 2021, 190 political prisoners have died due to torture and denial of healthcare. By July 2025, the total number of prison deaths had exceeded 1,800.
  • More than 3.5 million people have been displaced by conflict.
  • Over 20 million people—including 10.4 million women and girls and 6.3 million children—are facing worsening hardship due to the junta’s road blockades and obstruction of humanitarian aid.
  • In Rakhine State, an emergency famine situation has emerged. A WFP (World Food Programme) statement on August 12 warned that 57% of families in central Rakhine cannot afford basic food items.

Similarly, on August 19, the UN Security Council was warned that the junta’s planned sham election would lack freedom and fairness, and could serve as a license for the military to continue committing crimes.

Japan’s Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi and International IDEA also stated that the junta’s elections cannot be accepted. Likewise, the Independent Press Council Myanmar (IPCM) condemned the junta’s repressive laws curbing media freedom and internet access.

Therefore, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun urged the international community to take decisive and effective action to end the suffering of the Myanmar people, immediately halt the supply of arms, ammunition, jet fuel, and financial support to the junta, and keep Myanmar at the center of sustained international attention and action. Radio NUG

The National League for Democracy (NLD) has announced the expulsion of U Soe Htet (aka Salai Mello), State Hluttaw MP for Paletwa Township, who was preparing to participate in the junta’s sham election.

According to the NLD’s Central Executive Committee, the party had already prohibited participation in the illegitimate election organized by the military junta, as recognizing or joining it would lend political legitimacy to the unlawful coup regime.

Defying this directive and going against the will of the people, U Soe Htet sought to contest under the junta’s election system. As a result, the NLD officially declared him expelled from the party for failing to abide by party decisions.

U Soe Htet was not only a member of the NLD’s Paletwa Township Executive Committee, but also the elected State Hluttaw MP for Paletwa Constituency (1) in the 2020 election.

It is learned that on July 10, U Soe Htet registered the Chin State Congress Party (NCC) with the junta’s election commission. Less than two months later, on September 1, he was expelled from the NLD.

📌📌 4. Justice For Myanmar calls on Chinese and Indian leaders to end collaboration with Myanmar junta

September 1
Radio NUG

Justice For Myanmar has issued a statement urging the international community to step up pressure on Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to halt their expanding collaboration with Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing. The group emphasized the need for both leaders to stop supporting the junta while it continues committing atrocities and crimes against humanity against the people of Myanmar.

President Xi invited Min Aung Hlaing to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, which was also attended by the Indian Prime Minister and the Russian President. At the summit, Xi pledged to further strengthen Myanmar-China “strategic partnership relations” in security, border stability, and development with Chinese assistance. Justice For Myanmar highlighted that China continues to provide the junta with arms, financial support, and other aid—directly enabling and legitimizing its ongoing violence against civilians.

Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a separate bilateral meeting with Min Aung Hlaing during the SCO Summit. They discussed expanding cooperation in trade, mining, energy, communications, and security. Justice For Myanmar noted that India’s provision of military support risks directly aiding the junta in its violent suppression of pro-democracy protests.

In addition, both China and India have supported Myanmar junta’s bid for SCO membership. Activists criticized this as granting political recognition to the junta’s illegitimate elections. Human rights groups are demanding that China and India immediately end all political and military cooperation with the junta and impose an arms embargo.
