Radio NUG

On August 29 around 5:30 PM, the Arakan Army (AA) fired at a military vessel sailing in the sea between Ramree Island and Man Aung Island in Kyaukphyu Township, Rakhine State, using a Howitzer (long-range artillery) from a distance of about 10,000 meters.

AA spokesperson Khine Thu Kha told several media outlets that the strike hit the target, causing the ship to catch fire and retreat.

“The vessel that was struck is one that has been patrolling around the Kyaukphyu–Ramree area and shelling civilian villages with heavy artillery and rocket salvos,” he stated.

In Kyaukphyu Township, the junta military has been conducting counter-offensives with army, navy, and air force units to defend against AA’s assaults. Despite these efforts, AA has already seized control of most villages, while the junta only holds positions at naval bases and garrisons in the town.

Although AA temporarily withdrew from some villages along the Ramree–Kyaukphyu road (such as Lape Khamao [New Village] and Pya The) during the second week of August, AA successfully regained control of Lape Khamao village on August 28.

Kyaukphyu Township hosts Chinese investment projects, including the Kyaukphyu Airport and the Dhanyawaddy Naval Base Headquarters. Since February 2025, fighting has escalated intensely, with the junta deploying advanced drones and combined land, sea, and air forces in its operations.
