🚩🚩 1. After the Sagaing Earthquake, Military Airstrikes on Hospitals Have Increased, Says NUG
August 7
According to the Ministry of Health of the National Unity Government (NUG), the Myanmar military junta has increased airstrikes on hospitals and clinics compared to previous years, particularly after the earthquake that struck Sagaing on March 28.
Following the quake, many civilians lost their homes and lives. Since then, the military has intentionally escalated its attacks on medical facilities, the NUG reports.
For instance, on July 29, at approximately 10:30 PM, the military launched two aerial bombings on Charging People’s Hospital, located in Kantbalu Township, Sagaing Region. The attack killed five innocent civilians, including a child receiving treatment, an elderly person, and two women. An additional three people were severely injured. The hospital’s inpatient ward, operating room, radiology department, pharmacy, medical equipment storage, and staff quarters sustained significant damage.
In April, hospitals and rural clinics in the following Sagaing townships were attacked:
Wetlet, Kawlin, Wuntho, Inndaw, Debayin, Sagaing, and Tigyaing.
Additional attacks occurred in:
Myingyan Earthquake Mobile Clinic in Madaya, Mandalay Region;
Facilities in Singu and Thabeikkyin townships;
A hospital in Mogok, Kachin State.
In May, airstrikes hit:
Hospitals in Salingyi, Pinlebu, and Kawlin in Sagaing Region;
A hospital in Hpa-An, under the Karen National Union Brigade 1;
A hospital in Pulaw Township, Tanintharyi Region;
A clinic in Kamma town, Pakokku Township, Magway Region;
Hospitals in Mying and Pauk;
A hospital in Yezagyo, which was attacked with heavy artillery.
In June, the Tatmadaw carried out an aerial bombing using helicopters on the Taiknain Hospital in Salingyi’s Mataungta village. Other attacks targeted:
A clinic in Thayetchaung Township, Tanintharyi;
A rural clinic in Nwathogyi Township, Mandalay;
The well-known Metta Nanda Hospital, founded by Dr. Nandamalabhivamsa in Singu, which straddles Madaya and Singu townships;
A hospital in Kyitaungpok Village, Singu Township.
In July, the military conducted further airstrikes on:
A hospital in Hsipaw, Northern Shan State;
A clinic in Demoso Township, Karenni State;
A rural health center in Pauk Township, Magway Region;
Charging Hospital again in Kantbalu, Sagaing Region.
According to the NUG Ministry of Health, these attacks have resulted in civilian casualties—including healthcare workers, their families, patients, caretakers, monks, children, women, pregnant individuals, and elderly citizens. Infrastructure and equipment damage includes:
Hospital buildings,
Medicines and medical equipment,
Healthcare staff housing,
Religious buildings,
Schools, and
Civilians’ homes.
The junta, adhering to militant authoritarianism for over four years, has deliberately targeted the healthcare sector. The NUG emphasizes that these actions blatantly violate international humanitarian laws, including:
The Geneva Conventions,
UN Security Council Resolutions, and
International human rights laws.
The NUG Health Ministry expresses strong condemnation of the junta’s violent actions and stands in solidarity with local communities and frontline healthcare workers who continue providing public health services despite risking their lives.
The NUG urges all those who are collaborating with or supporting the junta—directly or indirectly—to cease their involvement immediately, warning that the junta and its affiliates will be held legally accountable under the law.
Finally, the NUG calls on the international community not to ignore these atrocities, especially war crimes and crimes against humanity committed through airstrikes on innocent civilians and healthcare providers. The NUG urges swift and decisive international action and asks the global community to stand with the suffering people of Myanmar.
