📌📌 1. KHRG urges international community to condemn the terrorist military for violating international law and designate it as a principal perpetrator
August 30
The Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) has called on the international community to condemn the actions of the terrorist military, which has been violating international law, and to designate it clearly as a principal perpetrator.
The appeal was issued today, August 30, on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
According to KHRG, since the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar’s human rights situation has deteriorated significantly, accountability mechanisms have collapsed, and a culture of impunity has prevailed.
In international humanitarian law (IHL), which applies to civil wars, enforced disappearance is explicitly prohibited. Moreover, under international criminal law, widespread and systematic enforced disappearances committed against civilians constitute crimes against humanity.
KHRG further emphasized that enforced disappearances violate international human rights law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), to which Myanmar became a party in 2017.
Therefore, KHRG urged the international community and all relevant stakeholders to clearly recognize the terrorist military—responsible for mass displacement, enforced disappearances, and other atrocities—as the principal perpetrator creating a human rights and humanitarian crisis.
In addition, KHRG presented eight demands, including: not recognizing or legitimizing the terrorist military through sham elections; refraining from signing agreements or cooperating with them; cutting off financial support and arms sales that enable their crimes; and imposing targeted sanctions on military leaders, their business partners, and key financial sources.
