📌📌 1. NUG Statement on the Illegal and Sham Election
August 24, Radio NUG

The National Unity Government (NUG) issued a statement on August 24 outlining its official stance and position regarding the illegal and sham election.

The statement emphasized that the military, which unlawfully detained President U Win Myint, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and other leaders of the people’s elected government on February 1, 2021, thereby committing treason, has absolutely no authority or legitimacy to conduct elections. It recalled that this very military has been officially declared as “The Enemy of the State” by the people and the Union of Myanmar as of September 5, 2024.

Furthermore, the statement pointed out that the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) already abolished the 2008 Constitution on March 30, 2021, which means that all actions taken under that charter by the military junta are illegal and without lawful basis.

The results of the 2020 general election remain valid and legitimate. The legislative and executive institutions formed as a result of that election are still firmly in existence. Therefore, forcing through a sham election in direct opposition to the will of the people, and in pursuit of entrenching military power while seeking impunity for the grave crimes of war already committed, is both an assault on the democratic process and an illegitimate attempt to seize sovereign power from the people.

The NUG reiterated its firm belief that Myanmar’s future can only be genuinely decided through a democratic, inclusive, and people-driven political process, not through the military’s manipulative schemes. In partnership with allied ethnic organizations and revolutionary forces, the NUG reaffirmed its commitment to continue the Spring Revolution along its principal political path: the Federal Democracy Charter. Specifically, it pledged to proceed under Part (III), Roadmap Stage (11), which provides for “drafting and ratifying a Federal Democratic Constitution through a Union Assembly and a referendum, followed by elections.”

The NUG’s Central Committee on Counter-Terrorism has already designated the military junta and its subordinate body, the Union Election Commission, as terrorist organizations. Accordingly, the statement warned that if the junta attempts to force citizens in NUG-administered areas to participate in its sham election, effective enforcement action, including arrests, will be taken in accordance with law.

The junta has a long history of perpetrating oppression, ethnic persecution, and grave war crimes against Myanmar’s peoples. Since its treasonous seizure of power on February 1, 2021, it has continued committing mass atrocities against civilians during the Spring Revolution. The statement also noted that since August 2025, the junta has escalated its military operations—bombardments, artillery strikes, military offensives, and war crimes—specifically to pave the way for imposing a sham election under a rebranded structure.

Despite such repression, the people of Myanmar, both inside the country and abroad, have consistently rejected the junta’s illegitimate power grab and voiced their will through multiple forms of resistance. The NUG expressed full confidence that the people will likewise oppose and resist, by all possible means, this attempt to stage a sham election at gunpoint.

Finally, the NUG urged international governments, organizations, and democratic allies to recognize that the junta’s planned sham election is not a solution to Myanmar’s crisis. Any support or endorsement of this act would only serve to legitimize war crimes and enable impunity. Instead, the NUG called upon the international community to stand firmly with the people of Myanmar and to reject the junta’s fake election, while strengthening support for Myanmar’s struggle to restore democracy, human rights, and sustainable peace.

📌📌 3. Kanbalu People’s Administration Team Declares It Will Never Accept the Junta’s Sham Election
August 24, Radio NUG

The Kanbalu Township People’s Administration Team (PAT) has issued a declaration stating that it will never accept the sham election being organized by the terrorist military junta.

The statement explained that Min Aung Hlaing’s junta, in its attempt to create a supposed political exit strategy, is planning to hold a fake election, and that Kanbalu Township in the Sagaing Federal Unit has been listed among the constituencies where such an election is to be staged.

Kanbalu Township consists of 2 towns and 269 villages. Of these, revolutionary forces currently control 235 villages, where people’s administration bodies have already been formed and are functioning.

Therefore, the junta, which controls only 2 towns and 34 villages in the township, cannot realistically or legitimately organize any election in Kanbalu, the statement said.

The Kanbalu PAT firmly declared that it will never accept the sham election of the military junta, and further warned that it will not provide any security guarantees to individuals who choose to participate in the election as candidates, or to those who assist in organizing or implementing it.

📌📌 4. SSPP Rejects Junta’s Allegations of Involvement in Narcotics
August 24, Radio NUG

The Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) has issued a rebuttal denying the junta’s allegations that SSPP/SSA members or officers are involved in narcotics trafficking.

On August 22, the military council announced the seizure of narcotics in Yangon Region valued at more than 257 billion kyats, and alleged that the operation was masterminded by a man identified as Lt. Col. Sai Su, whom the junta claimed to be a member of the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP).

In response, the SSPP clarified that no such person, “Lt. Col. Sai Su,” exists within its organization. Instead, the only officer with a similar name is “Col. Sai Su,” who serves as Secretary within the SSPP and is responsible exclusively for political, military, peace, and national reconciliation coordination affairs.

The SSPP described the allegation as a deliberate fabrication intended to tarnish the political reputation of SSPP/SSA, to sow division within the organization, and to disrupt its ongoing peace processes.

The SSPP further emphasized that in the areas under its control, it consistently undertakes anti-narcotics operations, including prevention, public education, arrests, and destruction of seized drugs. It stressed that party members and organization members are strictly prohibited from engaging in narcotics production, trafficking, or any form of involvement.
