📌📌 1. NUG Ministry of Human Rights Issues Detailed Statement on Airstrikes in Mawchi Area

The Ministry of Human Rights of the National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a detailed statement regarding the terrorist military junta’s airstrikes in the Mawchi area.

On August 17, the terrorist junta carried out two aerial bombardments on the Mawchi area in Hpasawng Township, Karenni State. The attack deliberately targeted a hospital situated in a civilian-populated area—despite the absence of any military targets or ongoing battles in the vicinity.

According to the statement, 25 innocent civilians were killed, including five children under the age of 18, while 19 others sustained injuries, among them one child under 18.

The Ministry emphasized that the junta’s intentional targeting of a hospital and civilian settlements located around 15 miles away from the nearest battlefield constitutes yet another piece of evidence documenting the junta’s grave and ongoing war crimes, which it continues to commit with impunity.

The National Unity Government’s Ministry of Justice held Meeting No. (1/2025) with township prison officials and inmate supervisory staff on the morning of August 15, 2025.

Attendees included:

  • Union Minister for Justice U Thein Oo,

  • Office chiefs such as U Kyaw Kyaw,
  • Departmental members, liaison officers, and prison officials from 16 townships.

During the meeting, the Union Minister emphasized the urgent need to reform Myanmar’s prison system. He highlighted that after serving their appropriate punishments, inmates should be given the opportunity to reintegrate into society as responsible citizens. If denied such opportunities, he warned, inmates would be trapped in cycles of negative consequences.

He further stressed that although inmates are serving due sentences, they remain human beings who deserve to be treated with dignity. With proper guidance from prison teachers and supervisors, inmates can acknowledge their mistakes and pursue the path of correction.

The Minister underlined that the responsibilities of prison staff affect not only each individual inmate but also society as a whole. In this sense, prison officials are sowing the seeds of a new system. He expressed personal respect and pride, and affirmed that the entire Ministry of Justice recognizes and honors their service.

He added that the officials, as members of the Ministry’s family, are also part of the Spring Revolution family, and urged them to continue fulfilling their responsibilities—not only for the present struggle but also for the country’s future.

The meeting proceeded with Q&A sessions in which prison officials raised concerns, to which responsible authorities provided clarifications. General discussions followed, and Union Minister U Thein Oo formally endorsed the meeting’s resolutions and outlined the way forward.
