Radio NUG

The Sangha Union (Mandalay) has announced that the abbot of Yadanar Pugan Monastery in Mandalay, who had been unjustly arrested by the terrorist military junta, has passed away due to torture-inflicted injuries and inadequate medical treatment.

The abbot, U Pa Thanthiya, succumbed to cancer on July 25 at Mandalay General Hospital, following prolonged mistreatment in prison. He was initially unlawfully arrested by junta forces on the night of February 21, 2022, and later sentenced on July 17, 2023, to 15 years in prison under Section 50(j).

It was reported that the torture he endured in custody led to the onset of cancer. On October 15, 2023, he was transferred to Mandalay General Hospital for treatment. However, due to a lack of adequate medical care, he passed away after two years of imprisonment at the age of 36, with 16 years in monkhood.

The Sangha Union (Mandalay) stated that the death of Sayadaw U Pa Thanthiya, along with other political prisoners, without proper medical attention and under repressive control, is a deliberate killing by the terrorist military junta.

Radio NUG

Clashes between Thailand and Cambodia over a disputed border area have entered their third day. Thai news sources reported that the Thai military has seized control of the Cambodian military base on Phu Makhuea hilltop.

At approximately 9:20 a.m. Thai Standard Time on July 26, Thai forces captured the base, hoisted the Thai flag, and during the assault, 10 Cambodian soldiers were reportedly killed. According to Thai media outlet Khaosod, weapons including AK-47 and M16 rifles, machine guns, RPGs, 40mm launchers, and drones were confiscated.

Cambodian forces reportedly attempted to recapture the base using heavy artillery. However, the Thai military maintained full control over the surrounding Phu Makhuea hill area, deployed heavy weapons, and destroyed Cambodian outposts and communication rail lines.

Following two days of fighting, Cambodia issued an immediate call for a ceasefire. Cambodian Ambassador to the United Nations, Chha Heakio, stated that Cambodia seeks to resolve the dispute through peaceful means. However, the Thai side has not responded directly but expressed a preference for direct bilateral talks, according to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

While ASEAN member states, as well as China and the United States, have offered to mediate the conflict, Thailand has reportedly rejected any intervention from outside parties.

The fighting has forced tens of thousands of residents on both sides of the border to flee their homes. Casualty reports state that 15 civilians, including several non-combatants, have been killed on the Thai side, and 12 on the Cambodian side. Additionally, stray shells reportedly damaged several homes inside Laos.
