“Stand with the Student Protesters in Burma and Condemn the Burmese Government Use of Violence”
Students in Burma are currently protesting a controversial new education law which will curb academic freedoms by restricting student unions and allowing government to dominate educational decisions.
Last Thursday, the Burmese government cracked down on another student-led solidarity protest in Rangoon with baton-wielding police and plain-clothes thugs, which shows that they have no interest to negotiate with university students.
The Burmese government has blocked the student group All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABSFU) from marching more than a month ago from Mandalay to Rangoon in Latpadan, 87 miles northwest of Rangoon.
Government leaders have deployed hundreds of police and set up a blockage of riot control vehicles and barriers to silence them. More than a dozen students and activists have been arrested and later released to intimidate this student’s movement.
The New York Burmese community will stage a solidarity protest as a global action day in front of the Burmese Consulate in New York City on March 13th which marks the 27th Anniversary of the Burma Human Rights Day (Phone Maw Day).
We will also condemn Burma’s deteriorating human rights situations and the Burmese government use of violence against workers, farmers, journalists and citizens of Burma.
Please join with the New York Burmese democracy advocates to protest on the Burmese government’s violence crackdown on the peaceful protesters and to show solidarity with the students.
When: March 13, 2015 – 4:00pm ~ 5:00pm
Where: Burmese Consulate NYC – 10 E 77th Street, New York, NY 10075.
