Thakin Kodaw Hmaing’s birthday this week (23 March 1876): This is the ear-boring ceremony of my aunt Daw Khin Ma Ma c. 1950. At the top left is U Khant, younger brother of U Thant. At the top right is my great-grandmother, Daw Nan Thaung (U Thant’s mother). The others are Daw Khin Ma Ma’s siblings and mother Daw Saw May.<\/p>\n The ceremony was at U Khant’s apartment at 200 Phayre Street (Pansodan). The guest of honour was the great nationalist leader and writer Thakin Kodaw Hmaing (seated on left).<\/p>\n Thakin Kodaw Hmaing, when as a boy aged 9, saw King Thibaw and Queen Supayalat taken away by the British from Mandalay.
