This vital river is facing severe risk becauseof plans to build a series of dams in Kachin state, northern Burma where theriver originates. Chinese companies are working with Burma\u2019s military leadersto build the dams, and all the power generated from the dam will go to China.<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Zawgyi-One; font-size: 11pt;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Zawgyi-One; font-size: 11pt;\"><i>Therehas bee strong resistance from the people of Kachin state who will bedrastically affected by this dam. More and more people throughout Burma arealso calling out for a stop to this dam as it will affect the socio-economicsituation of the whole country.<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Zawgyi-One; font-size: 11pt;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Zawgyi-One; font-size: 11pt;\"><i>Also,a team of scientists from China and Burma, hired and funded by the Chinesecompany, submitted its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to both Chineseand Burmese authorities in October 2009, in which they recommended theabandonment of the largest project, the Myitsone dam.
