When a stronger force exploits the weak, many hope that the world will stand up for justice, protect vulnerable communities, and provide both moral and material support. Institutions such as the United Nations, along with influential democratic nations, are often expected to help deter aggression and defend fundamental human rights.

Following Myanmar’s 1988 pro-democracy uprising, the military seized power, violently suppressed demonstrations, imprisoned political activists, and refused to honor the results of the 1990 general election. Instead of transferring power to the election winners, the military redirected the political process toward drafting a new constitution while maintaining its grip on the country.

During that period, the international community responded through diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, and the suspension of cooperation with the military government. While there was debate over whether sanctions harmed ordinary citizens as well as military leaders, international pressure is widely regarded as one of the factors that eventually contributed to Myanmar’s political opening and reforms that followed the 2010 election.

A similar pattern emerged after the military coup in 2021. Many countries refused to recognize the military regime as Myanmar’s legitimate government, international investment slowed or withdrew, and the United Nations continued recognizing Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, who opposed the coup, as Myanmar’s Permanent Representative. These actions signaled continued international support for democracy.

However, today’s geopolitical environment is fundamentally different from that of the late 1980s and 1990s.

Myanmar now occupies a far more strategic position for China, serving as an important gateway to the Indian Ocean and a key corridor for energy imports. At the same time, the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war, continuing conflicts in the Middle East, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, and the recent confrontation involving Israel, the United States, and Iran have shifted global attention away from Myanmar.

As major powers become increasingly consumed by their own geopolitical rivalries, Myanmar’s democratic crisis struggles to remain a priority on the international agenda.

The role of the United Nations has also weakened in many of today’s armed conflicts. Since President Donald Trump returned to office, the United States has increasingly emphasized national interests, economic competition, and strategic influence. Many observers argue that international politics is moving away from a rules-based order toward one where power increasingly determines outcomes.

For Myanmar’s democracy movement, this means that relying solely on international organizations or Western democracies to generate meaningful pressure on the military has become far more difficult than in previous decades.

Recent developments surrounding the International Criminal Court (ICC) illustrate this changing landscape. Last year, the ICC Prosecutor sought an arrest warrant for Myanmar military leader Min Aung Hlaing over alleged crimes against the Rohingya. Yet in recent days, senior U.S. officials have discussed efforts to weaken or even dismantle the ICC following its arrest warrants against Israeli leaders over the war in Gaza.

The ICC was established to prosecute individuals responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity, and major war crimes. However, when powerful states oppose its actions because they affect their own allies, the court’s authority inevitably comes under pressure.

Between 2023 and 2025, more than 70,000 civilians were reportedly killed during Israel’s military operations in Gaza, many of them women and children. The ICC’s response to those events has generated strong political backlash from governments that support Israel, further demonstrating how international justice itself has become entangled in great-power politics.

For Myanmar, the implications are significant.

As global attention shifts elsewhere and powerful countries increasingly shield their allies from accountability, Myanmar’s military leaders face less international pressure than many had hoped. Efforts to hold them accountable for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity may continue, but the path toward justice is likely to become longer and more difficult.

In today’s international environment, where power increasingly outweighs principles, those responsible for serious abuses often receive protection from powerful allies. Under such conditions, Myanmar’s military leadership may continue to avoid accountability for some time, even as the suffering of the country’s people continues.

Myanmar Spring Chronicle – Scenes from July 15 (MoeMaKa), July 14, 2026 A World Where Power Prevails Over Justice: What It Means for Myanmar For the people of Myanmar, it is natural to look to the international community when confronted…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[9,58
100
post-9737","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-current","category-features","tag-myanmar-spring-revolution

https://moemaka.net/eng/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/747931555_1558935895933376_6333756774103927943_n.jpg
["GET
