Among the dead were not only men but also women. Reports indicate that 13 bodies were found in a village known as Swel Gyi, while additional bodies were reportedly discovered within Myitche town itself. Some reports suggest that those killed may have been residents who remained in the town and villages during the military operation and were attempting to extinguish fires when their homes were burned.

Different reports provide varying casualty figures. Some state that more than 40 bodies have been found, while others report over 20. One news report, citing a humanitarian assistance group, stated that by June 4, more than 30 bodies had been recovered from Myitche town and nearby villages connected to it.

During the military operation, homes and several monasteries in Myitche and surrounding villages were reportedly burned and destroyed. Although residents were aware of the dangers posed by the advancing military column, some chose to remain behind in an effort to protect their homes and property from destruction.

It is believed that many of those who were killed were among the residents who stayed behind. The events in Myitche and its surrounding villages represent one of the deadliest incidents in recent years in the areas around Nyaung-U and Pakokku townships in Mandalay Region, both in terms of civilian deaths and property destruction.

While these events were unfolding, a video message by the nationalist monk U Parmaukka of Magway Monastery in Yangon appeared on social media, appealing for an end to the burning of towns and villages. The appeal is widely believed to have been related to the destruction carried out by military forces in Myitche and nearby villages.

Following the 2021 military coup, local People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) emerged in many parts of Myanmar, including areas such as Myitche and the Tant Kyi Taung region across the river from Bagan and Nyaung-U. Similar local resistance forces have also been active in villages along the border between Nyaung-U and Pakokku townships.

In recent months, junta forces have conducted military offensives in Pakokku, Yaw, Saw, and parts of Sagaing Region, including Pale and Yinmabin. These operations appear aimed at reasserting territorial control, disrupting transportation and communication routes used by resistance groups, and gaining control over natural-resource revenues and taxation checkpoints along major roads. The killings and widespread burning of villages have occurred in the context of these military campaigns.

⸻

Explosion at Sagaing Immigration Office Injures More Than 20

Another major development today concerns an explosion at the Immigration and Population Department (Immigration Office) in Sagaing city during office hours. Around 20 people, including government employees and civilians who were at the office for registration and household documentation services, were reportedly injured.

According to reports, a suspected timed explosive device detonated beneath the desk of an employee at the Sagaing Township Immigration Office. Three office staff members and 17 civilians were reportedly wounded.

Among the 20 injured were 12 women and 8 men, with four victims reportedly suffering serious injuries.

Attacks targeting government offices and security installations in urban areas had become less common in recent years, making this incident notable. As of now, no armed group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

In Myanmar, township immigration offices are responsible for issuing and processing national registration cards, household registration documents, and biometric identification systems known as UID. Because of ongoing conflict, forced displacement, and the destruction of homes and villages, people frequently lose or damage their identification documents. Increased security checks and travel restrictions have also made obtaining and replacing these documents more important and time-consuming than in normal circumstances.

Several ethnic armed organizations, including those in the Kokang region, Wa State, and Ta’ang (Palaung) areas, have also issued their own regional identity documents.

Bombings and attacks targeting civilian government offices and prisons were widespread between 2021 and around 2023 but have become far less common in recent years. This decline is partly attributed to the increasing difficulty urban guerrilla groups face in operating clandestinely due to stricter security measures, including guest-registration requirements and facial-recognition systems such as the PSMS system in major cities.

Sagaing city, where the explosion occurred, is located in an area where PDF forces remain active in nearby villages and surrounding regions, providing the broader context for the incident.

Myanmar Spring Chronicle – Scenes from June 5 (MoeMaKa), June 6, 2026 After a month-long military operation in Myitche (Myit Khe) town, dozens of civilians found killed; over 20 injured in an explosion at the Immigration Office in Sagaing Nearly…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[9,58
100
post-9498","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-current","category-features","tag-myanmar-spring-revolution

https://moemaka.net/eng/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/714840249_1422138229950488_4561275082874739145_n.jpg
["GET
