These occasions highlight the fundamental values that must be upheld regarding press freedom and call on governments and relevant institutions—legislative, judicial, and executive bodies, as well as armed organizations—to respect and protect it. They also advocate for the release of journalists who have been arrested while doing their work or because of it.

In general, it has long been assumed that countries with greater press freedom are the developed nations of the Global North governed by liberal democratic systems. However, in recent years, this assumption has proven not entirely accurate. While it is unsurprising that authoritarian states lack press freedom, even in countries considered powerful democracies—such as the United States—there have been frequent instances where government leaders, including presidents, have taken legal action against media outlets.

Over the past nearly three years, during Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip—framed as efforts to eliminate Hamas—more than 250 journalists have been killed. Yet, no perpetrators have been investigated. Journalists have been killed both unintentionally and in targeted attacks despite being clearly identified as media workers. There have also been incidents of “double-tap” war crimes, where rescue workers responding to an initial strike are attacked again minutes or hours later, resulting in further journalist casualties. As recently as the past week, another journalist was killed by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

The killing of more than 250 journalists by Israeli forces in a single region over nearly three years represents one of the worst incidents in the history of press freedom. Despite this, no democratic country has taken action to sanction Israel or halt arms sales.

Global press freedom rankings have continued to deteriorate in recent years. Countries like Myanmar—where journalists are arrested, imprisoned, and even killed without accountability—have paradoxically risen in rankings compared to previous years. Myanmar moved from 169th place last year to 166th in the May 3, 2026 ranking—not because of improvements in press freedom, but because three countries with even worse conditions fell below it.

Across conflicts in the Middle East, the Ukraine–Russia war, civil wars in parts of Africa, and Myanmar’s own civil war, journalists continue to lose their lives while gathering news. Many more have been injured, detained, or subjected to torture, numbering from dozens to hundreds.

In Myanmar alone, over the past five years, at least 7 to 9 journalists have been killed or died in shootings. More than 200 media workers have been arrested and imprisoned. Currently, 18 journalists remain behind bars, most detained by the military regime, though some arrests have also been carried out by resistance armed groups.

The state of press freedom in Myanmar is being measured in the most brutal terms—by the number of journalists arrested, assassinated, or killed in custody. It is not assessed through more typical indicators such as legal protections for press freedom, regulatory frameworks, the financial independence of media organizations, or freedom from government influence.

Because journalists cannot work freely within the country, many are now based in neighboring countries. From there, they report on developments inside Myanmar using statements, social media posts, and remote interviews. This situation inevitably limits the accuracy of information and the ability to fully capture on-the-ground realities.

In conclusion, global press freedom is now at one of its worst levels in decades, while press freedom in Myanmar has reached its lowest point in 40 to 50 years.

Myanmar Spring Chronicle – Scenes from May 3 (MoeMaKa), May 4, 2026 World Press Freedom Day and Press Freedom in Myanmar Every year, May 3 is observed as World Press Freedom Day (some translate it into Burmese as World Journalism Freedom…

Read more →

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[9,58
100
post-9311","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-current","category-features","tag-myanmar-spring-revolution
["GET
