The coup leader\u2019s trip to Russia<\/h2>\n

The Myanmar coup leader left the country on September 24 to attend the World Nuclear Forum 2025<\/strong> in Moscow. This comes as Western Europe continues to allege that Russian unmanned drones have violated the airspace<\/strong> of several countries, even as the Russian Federation hosts the forum.<\/p>\n

Given that the junta has been pushing to build a small nuclear power plant<\/strong>, it\u2019s unsurprising he gladly accepted Russia\u2019s invitation. But for a country mired in economic decline and a nationwide civil war, the idea of constructing a nuclear power station\u2014something that requires security and stability<\/strong>\u2014is hard for many to understand. It appears more like a propaganda project<\/strong> aimed at spreading the junta\u2019s narrative.<\/p>\n

While armed conflict is widespread and the territory under junta control is increasingly limited, the regime is dreaming of a nuclear plant<\/strong>. Even Southeast Asian neighbors without civil wars and with stronger economies are not pursuing nuclear power<\/strong>, yet Myanmar is\u2014apparently to strengthen ties with Russia<\/strong>, to grandstand among neighbors<\/strong>, and for other such motives.<\/p>\n

To meet electricity needs, Myanmar should more realistically expand natural-gas plants, hydropower, and solar<\/strong>. But international sanctions and war<\/strong> have damaged the power system and reduced supply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Throughout 2025<\/strong>, the coup leader has seized diplomatic invitations to travel frequently.<\/p>\n

He has visited Russia multiple times<\/strong> this year and met President Putin<\/strong>. He also attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization<\/strong> meeting and China\u2019s 80th Anniversary Victory over Fascism<\/strong> military events, meeting the Indian prime minister<\/strong> and China\u2019s president<\/strong>\u2014appearances the junta touts as diplomatic prestige.<\/p>\n

Meetings with Russia and China<\/strong> also provide chances to purchase or exchange arms<\/strong>. The junta can acquire drones, related technologies, and munitions<\/strong> from Russia and China, and obtain certain military technologies and components from India<\/strong>. One BBC Burmese report said a recent agreement provides that Russia will assist in building a nuclear power plant<\/strong>, while Myanmar will export munitions<\/strong> made in its state arms factories to Russia\u2014interpreted as supplying items like artillery shells<\/strong> needed for the war in Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Toward China and India<\/strong>, the junta appears focused on buying drones, drone technologies, and anti-jamming \/ electronic warfare capabilities<\/strong>. After suffering heavy drone attacks in 2023 and early 2024<\/strong>, the regime has, since mid-2024, worked to bolster drone equipment, training, and munitions<\/strong>. In this year\u2019s battles and offensives, the junta\u2019s expanded drone use<\/strong> has measurably affected outcomes.<\/p>\n

In short, the coup leader\u2019s foreign trips are not only about diplomatic recognition; they also aim to secure technology and munitions<\/strong> needed for the ongoing war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
