Airstrike on a KIA training site in Shwegu; killing of nine women confirmed two years later<\/h2>\n

A military training school located in Kachin State\u2019s Shwegu Township<\/strong>, within KIA Brigade 11<\/strong> territory, was bombed by the junta\u2019s air force. Initial reports on the day of the incident said at least 17 people<\/strong> were killed.<\/p>\n

KIA spokesperson Col. Naw Bu<\/strong> said the exact death toll was still unknown, while some outlets reported 17\u201320<\/strong> fatalities. It is unclear whether the site was a school for KIA\u2019s own new recruits or a facility where the KIA trains PDF<\/strong> units from Upper Myanmar (e.g., Sagaing\/Mandalay). Since late 2021, the KIA has been known to train PDFs, supply arms and ammunition<\/strong>, and in some areas its officers have served as advisers or field commanders<\/strong> for township- or district-based PDF units.<\/p>\n

Recent reports (with photos) also showed PDF leaders from places such as Myingyan District<\/strong> and the Yaw area<\/strong> meeting KIA Deputy Chief of Staff Maj-Gen Gun Maw<\/strong> in May and June.<\/p>\n

The junta appears to have been systematically gathering intelligence<\/strong> on KIA gatherings, ceremonies, and training locations\/timings; there have been multiple strikes in recent years. Before 2020, during President Thein Sein\u2019s term, the military shelled the Laiza officers\u2019 training school<\/strong>. After the 2021 coup, in October 2022<\/strong> the air force bombed a KIO 62nd-anniversary<\/strong> event near A Nang Pa<\/strong> in Hpakant Township<\/strong>, killing an estimated 50\u201370 people<\/strong> (including civilians and musicians) and injuring over 100<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The latest airstrike inflicted heavy losses<\/strong> on the KIA as well as on PDFs attending training.<\/p>\n

A second development concerns nine women from Sar Kha village in Salingyi Township<\/strong> who were arrested in 2023<\/strong> by troops from Yinmabin District Battalion 28<\/strong>; their families have now, two years later<\/strong>, confirmed that all nine were executed<\/strong> and have reported the case to relevant organizations.<\/p>\n

One of the women was pregnant<\/strong>. Most were in their 30s\u201340s<\/strong>, with the oldest around 60<\/strong>. They worked at a military-run thread and textile factory<\/strong> in Salingyi and, after the coup, did not join the CDM<\/strong>. In 2023, village militia leaders U Zaw Lin<\/strong> and U Maung Cho<\/strong> brought Battalion 28 troops into the village under cover of darkness to seize the women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Families initially believed the women were being held elsewhere; only when eyewitnesses<\/strong> later spoke up did they learn the women had been killed<\/strong>. A familiar accusation\u2014that the victims were Pyu Saw Htee trainees<\/strong>\u2014has been denied by their families.<\/p>\n

Yinmabin Township has seen similar incidents before. In October 2021<\/strong>, the PDF group led by Thapyay Aye Sayadaw U Thawbaka<\/strong> (who used the nom de guerre \u201cBo Thanmani\u201d<\/strong>) killed 10 people<\/strong>, including members of another PDF unit and local firefighters. That group was also accused, with supporting evidence, of around 20 killings<\/strong> across 2021\u20132022<\/strong>, yet the NUG<\/strong> was unable to take action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

More recently, Yinmabin Battalions 14\/15<\/strong> were reportedly moving narcotics<\/strong> from Sagaing<\/strong> through to Chin State<\/strong> when a Chin PDF<\/strong> unit intercepted them, destroyed the drugs, and publicized the seizure.<\/p>\n

The NUG appears to face difficulties in addressing human-rights abuses<\/strong> committed by some resistance units\u2014because not all armed groups are fully under the NUG Defense Ministry\u2019s control, the chain of command<\/strong> is weak, and there is no robust justice system<\/strong>. Failure to act on grave extrajudicial killings<\/strong> fosters impunity and invites further abuses; many unreported cases may exist.<\/p>\n

Although the Salingyi\/Sar Kha killings occurred two years ago<\/strong>, the families are now demanding justice<\/strong> and punishment of those responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
