U.S. President Donald Trump Declares Myanmar at Risk of Failing International Drug Control Obligations

The U.S. Department of State announced that President Donald Trump has designated Myanmar as a country “at risk of failing” to meet its obligations under international agreements on narcotics control. This designation also came with a decision that could impact U.S. funding.

On September 15, under Section 706(2)(A) of the Foreign Relations Authorization Act, President Trump identified Afghanistan, Bolivia, Myanmar, Colombia, and Venezuela as countries that, over the past 12 months, have “failed demonstrably” to comply with international narcotics agreements and the requirements of Section 489(a)(1) of the Foreign Assistance Act.

This decision may affect U.S. assistance to those countries. However, Trump stated that maintaining relations is essential for U.S. national interests.

Regarding Myanmar, the State Department’s statement said the Myanmar government has made no real effort to fulfill its international responsibilities to combat narcotics. Myanmar has been identified as one of the world’s major hubs for the production or transit of narcotics and precursor chemicals. The government’s unwillingness to act has only worsened the crisis.

The designation could damage Myanmar’s military, economic, and political relations with the U.S. Moreover, the U.S. warned that unless Myanmar takes stronger measures within the next year to curb narcotics production and trafficking, harsher penalties may follow.

These reports were provided by Radio NUG correspondents Khur Shel and Padeh Phoe.

#RadioNUGLocalNews

#SpringRevolution

Myanmar Domestic News Updates – Sep 18, 2025 Morning 📌📌 1.
