NLD warns party members of strict action if found contesting in the junta’s sham elections

September 15

The National League for Democracy (NLD) has announced that any party members who are found contesting as candidates in the military council’s sham election processes will face strict action in accordance with party rules and regulations.

According to the statement, in the general election held on November 8, 2020, elections were conducted in 1,117 out of a total of 1,171 constituencies. Out of 38,271,447 eligible voters, a total of 27,512,855 voted in the People’s Assembly (Pyithu Hluttaw), 27,495,555 in the National Assembly (Amyotha Hluttaw), and 30,459,113 in the State/Regional Assemblies—amounting to a national voter turnout of over 71 percent.

The NLD secured 82.36 percent of all constituencies nationwide, winning 920 parliamentary seats. However, Min Aung Hlaing and the military disregarded the will of the people, violated the then-existing Constitution, staged an unlawful coup, and arbitrarily arrested senior members of the government and NLD leadership.

The statement further explains that, due to the numerous crises caused by the military coup, the junta is now attempting to deceive both the public and the international community in order to gain political legitimacy by organizing sham elections in the few areas it controls. The NLD has declared that it does not accept, recognize, or cooperate with such processes and has already informed both the public and the international community accordingly.

Therefore, the NLD has once again warned that if any of its members are found participating in these sham election processes or contesting as candidates, effective disciplinary action will be taken under party rules.

========================

📌📌 2.
