Funeral Held for Dagon University Students\u2019 Union Central Executive Member Daw Wut Yi Aung, Who Died in Insein Prison<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>July 22<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a resolute declaration\u2014*\u201cIf we die, let it be for the land; if we live, may our next generation walk under golden umbrellas\u201d\u2014*Daw Wut Yi Aung, a political prisoner and Central Executive Member of the Dagon University Students\u2019 Union (DUSU), died in Insein Prison on July 20 under the custody of the military junta following her unlawful arrest. Her funeral ceremony was held today, July 22, at Yayway Cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a statement from DUSU, Daw Wut Yi Aung (2000\u20132025) was born on January 27, 2000, in Yangon to U Than Maung (deceased) and Daw Hla Hla Aye. She was the youngest of five siblings. Her childhood name was &#8220;Mee Mee,&#8221; meaning &#8220;Smile.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She completed her high school education at Suboktara High School and began studying zoology at Dagon University in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, she joined the &#8220;Unity &amp; Progress&#8221; Dagon University Student Organization and also took part in the Dagon University Cheerleading Team. She later joined the DUSU, where she actively participated in student affairs and advocacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2020 DUSU election, she ran as a candidate representing the Unity &amp; Progress student organization and was elected to the Central Executive Committee, serving as a Joint General Secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, she served as a volunteer at quarantine centers to support disease control and treatment efforts, not only in Yangon but also in Rakhine State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the military coup in 2021, she actively participated in the anti-dictatorship movement together with DUSU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On September 14, 2021, she was arrested along with five other DUSU members by the military. She was subjected to severe interrogation and torture during military intelligence detention, leading to long-term physical and mental trauma. After three months, she began to experience respiratory distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 10, 2022, she was sentenced to three years in prison under Penal Code Section 505(a). She was later transferred to Daik-U Prison in April and subsequently returned to Insein Prison due to her deteriorating health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 27, 2023, she received an additional four-year prison sentence under Penal Code Section 52(a), bringing her total sentence to seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside Insein Prison, the lack of proper medical treatment, combined with inhumane prison conditions, caused her to suffer from chronic injuries, frequent collapses, fainting, and eventual cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She died at 3:00 a.m. on July 20, 2025, inside Insein Prison, according to official announcements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>========================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc\ud83d\udccc&nbsp;<strong>2.
