NUG: Only a Federal Democratic Union jointly built by all people can truly honour the sacrifice of the Martyr Leaders

July 19

Only when all ethnic peoples come together in unity to establish an equal and free Federal Democratic Union will the sacrifices of the Martyr Leaders be truly honoured, according to the National Unity Government (NUG).

The statement was made in a tribute message issued by the National Unity Government to mark the 78th Martyrs’ Day commemoration.

According to the message, on Saturday morning, July 19, 1947, Myanmar’s independence architect General Aung San and seven other key leaders—including ethnic leaders and cabinet ministers of the interim government formed by the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League (AFPFL)—were assassinated during a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat Office. The killing was orchestrated by Galon U Saw and his group, who attempted to seize power. The message noted that the event cast a dark shadow over the country’s future.

At the time of their assassination, the Martyr Leaders were striving to lay the foundation for the Union of Burma to become an independent and dignified country on the global stage. They sought to achieve complete independence from British colonial rule without dividing the hills and plains, and to lead the post-war national reconstruction.

The NUG stated that this political assassination dramatically altered the course of the nation’s destiny, diverting it from a democratic path and plunging it into a cycle of authoritarianism.

The core aspiration of the Martyr Leaders, the message explained, was to establish a new Federal Democratic Union of Myanmar that guarantees:

Full independence without discriminating between hill and plain regions,

Equality among all ethnic nationalities,

Warm and secure freedom,

Justice, and

Full federal democratic standards.

However, the message points out that more than seven decades later, their noble dream has not yet materialized. Instead, the country continues to suffer under the cruel oppression of a military dictatorship.

Therefore, the NUG emphasized that honouring Martyrs’ Day should go beyond ceremonial tributes. True honour must come through uniting all ethnic peoples to build a free, equal, federal democratic union—the very vision for which the Martyr Leaders gave their lives.

The message further notes that even today, during the ongoing Spring Revolution, many heroic martyrs continue to sacrifice their lives, blood, and sweat in the fight against military dictatorship. These sacrifices, it said, will forever stand as a lasting legacy for future generations.

========================

📌📌 2. NLD: Military and political goals must be jointly and successfully realised through unity

July 19

The National League for Democracy (NLD) emphasized that just as achieving military objectives is important, it is equally essential to collectively and successfully implement political goals with unity.

This call was made in the party’s tribute message sent to the 78th Martyrs’ Day commemoration jointly organized by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the National Unity Government (NUG).

According to the message, since the military coup, different resistance forces have united and launched an armed revolution to end military dictatorship. Over the past four years, some territories have been successfully seized and controlled.

The NLD noted that retaining these liberated areas and preventing their recapture by the junta is of utmost importance.

While recognizing the crucial need to complete military objectives, the NLD further urged that political goals must be simultaneously achieved through united and collaborative action.

The message also stated that the growing number of martyrs who have fallen during the Spring Revolution represents an alarming sign and a call to urgently bring the revolution to a conclusion.

The NLD reiterated that the release of all political prisoners, including President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, is a necessary condition for national peace and stability. Therefore, the party called on all revolutionary forces, both inside and outside the country, to raise strong demands for their release.

Finally, the NLD expressed its deepest reverence for General Aung San and the other Martyr Leaders, and honoured the revolutionary martyrs who lost their lives in the fight for democracy, affirming its continued respect and commitment to their legacy.

========================

📌📌 3.
