ICG Warns of Rising Violence if Junta Holds Elections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>July 18<\/strong><br><strong>Radio NUG<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>International Crisis Group (ICG)<\/strong>&nbsp;has released a report warning that the elections planned by Myanmar\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>military junta<\/strong>&nbsp;could&nbsp;<strong>lead to increased violence and instability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the report, an election&nbsp;<strong>lacking broad public trust and legitimacy<\/strong>&nbsp;would not offer a solution to Myanmar\u2019s political crisis but would instead&nbsp;<strong>deepen domestic political divisions and conflict<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICG emphasized that the&nbsp;<strong>international community<\/strong>&nbsp;should focus on supporting&nbsp;<strong>inclusive political processes involving all parties to the conflict<\/strong>, rather than recognizing junta-led elections as part of a legitimate political roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>========================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc\ud83d\udccc<strong>&nbsp;4. Earthquakes Near Mandalay and Naypyidaw; Some Buildings Damaged in the March 28 Quake Collapse Again<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>July 18<\/strong><br><strong>Radio NUG<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On&nbsp;<strong>July 18, 2025<\/strong>, earthquakes occurred near&nbsp;<strong>Shwebo, Sagaing Region<\/strong>&nbsp;(magnitude&nbsp;<strong>5.4<\/strong>&nbsp;on the Richter scale) and near&nbsp;<strong>Naypyidaw<\/strong>&nbsp;(magnitude&nbsp;<strong>4.2<\/strong>), according to a press release from the&nbsp;<strong>National Unity Government (NUG)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around&nbsp;<strong>4:00 PM<\/strong>, a&nbsp;<strong>magnitude 5.4 earthquake<\/strong>&nbsp;struck with an epicenter located&nbsp;<strong>34 km east-northeast of Shwebo<\/strong>, at a depth of&nbsp;<strong>35 km<\/strong>, lasting about&nbsp;<strong>10 seconds<\/strong>. The tremor was&nbsp;<strong>strongly felt<\/strong>&nbsp;in various areas including&nbsp;<strong>Mandalay<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Pyin Oo Lwin<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Amarapura<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Meiktila<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Yamethin<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Sagaing<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Monywa<\/strong>, according to regional news sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A local woman from&nbsp;<strong>Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay<\/strong>, recounted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt started shaking gently, then suddenly became intense and continuous. As I got outside, a ground-floor unit of a nearby unfinished building had collapsed. I didn\u2019t even know which way to run.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A local humanitarian volunteer noted that&nbsp;<strong>some buildings previously damaged in the March 28 earthquake collapsed further<\/strong>, although&nbsp;<strong>no injuries or casualties<\/strong>&nbsp;have been reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier that same day, at around&nbsp;<strong>1:39 PM Myanmar Standard Time<\/strong>, a&nbsp;<strong>magnitude 4.2<\/strong>&nbsp;minor quake struck&nbsp;<strong>39 km north of Naypyidaw<\/strong>, at a shallow depth of&nbsp;<strong>10 km<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, on&nbsp;<strong>July 16<\/strong>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<strong>3:28 AM<\/strong>, another aftershock measuring&nbsp;<strong>4.9<\/strong>&nbsp;on the Richter scale struck&nbsp;<strong>4 miles southeast of Pyigyidagun Township, Mandalay<\/strong>, also at a depth of&nbsp;<strong>10 km<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These successive quakes have&nbsp;<strong>deepened the psychological stress<\/strong>&nbsp;of locals still traumatized from the&nbsp;<strong>March 28 earthquake in Sagaing<\/strong>, and have further highlighted the&nbsp;<strong>urgent need for structural safety inspections<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>disaster preparedness by authorities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>========================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc\ud83d\udccc<strong>&nbsp;5. Locals in Lashio Providing Free Medical Care and Shelter to War Refugees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>July 18<\/strong><br><strong>Radio NUG<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<strong>Lashio<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Shan State<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>local residents<\/strong>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>offering free medical treatment and shelter<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>war refugees fleeing from Kyaukme and Hsipaw<\/strong>, and also&nbsp;<strong>renting out homes at reduced prices<\/strong>, according to local sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media posts have been circulating,&nbsp;<strong>sharing information about the availability of free shelter and medical aid<\/strong>&nbsp;for displaced persons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, a large number of refugees from&nbsp;<strong>Hsipaw and Kyaukme<\/strong>&nbsp;have arrived in&nbsp;<strong>Lashio<\/strong>, with many staying at the homes of&nbsp;<strong>relatives, friends, or acquaintances<\/strong>, it is reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The refugees fled due to&nbsp;<strong>airstrikes by the military junta<\/strong>&nbsp;in areas such as&nbsp;<strong>Hsipaw, Kyaukme, and Mogok<\/strong>, which are under the control of the&nbsp;<strong>Ta\u2019ang National Liberation Army (TNLA)<\/strong>, as the junta advances toward&nbsp;<strong>Naungcho<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>========================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc\ud83d\udccc<strong>&nbsp;6.
