NUG expresses deep disappointment with ASEAN over its continued inaction and failure to hold the terrorist military junta accountable for its grave and ongoing war crimes

July 17

The National Unity Government (NUG) has expressed its profound disappointment with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for its failure to take effective action and deliver concrete accountability against the terrorist military junta, which continues to perpetrate grave war crimes unabated.

The NUG issued its statement in response to the joint communiqué released at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

In that communiqué, ASEAN expressed concern over the escalating conflict in Myanmar and the worsening humanitarian situation. It also condemned ongoing acts of violence targeting civilians and public infrastructure, calling for immediate cessation of violence and urging for concrete steps to be taken. However, the NUG criticized the communiqué for lacking any effective action or accountability mechanisms against the terrorist junta, which continues to commit large-scale atrocities.

While ASEAN has repeatedly stated that its Five-Point Consensus remains the core reference point in addressing the Myanmar crisis, the junta has persisted in committing brutal and targeted violence against civilians. The NUG highlighted that, even on the very day the joint communiqué was released, the junta’s military launched an airstrike on the Sagaing Federal Unit, killing more than 30 innocent civilians, including children. This incident was brought to ASEAN’s attention.

In this context, the NUG pointed out that the junta’s attempt to hold an illegal sham election runs directly counter to the Five-Point Consensus, particularly the point on cessation of violence. The absence of any strong warnings or deterrence measures regarding this sham election, the NUG argued, effectively serves to shield and legitimize the junta’s actions through indirect complicity.

The NUG also commented on the performance of H.E. Tan Sri Othman Hashim, ASEAN’s Special Envoy on Myanmar. Although he has been engaging since January with ASEAN member states, dialogue partners, Myanmar’s neighbors, international and regional stakeholders, civil society, humanitarian actors, and experts, the NUG noted that he has not been able to visit Myanmar to meet with the country’s legitimate leaders who remain arbitrarily detained by the junta. Nor has he been able to exert meaningful pressure on the terrorist military regime. This, the NUG said, underscores the limitations ASEAN currently faces in addressing Myanmar’s crisis effectively.

As such, the NUG urged ASEAN to genuinely and effectively address Myanmar’s conflict by fully understanding and responding to the strong will of the Myanmar people and the objectives of the Spring Revolution. It emphasized that the junta’s coup and acts of terrorism have undermined regional unity, peace, stability, prosperity, and the vision of a people-centered ASEAN community. The NUG called on ASEAN to accept this reality and adopt meaningful strategies, including applying real pressure and appropriate, practical measures against the terrorist military junta.

========================

📌📌 2. Kalay–Thantlang Road Reopened for Public Use, CDF CDM Siyin Announces

July 17

The Chinland Defense Force – CDM Siyin (CDF CDM Siyin) has announced that the Kalay–Thantlang highway, which had been closed for over a month due to military conflict, is now reopened for public travel starting July 17.

The road had been shut down following the movement of junta troops stationed in Kalay toward the northern towns of Falam and Tiddim in Chin State. In response, the CDF Siyin, together with allied Chin revolutionary forces, launched coordinated attacks. As a result, junta forces suffered casualties and were forced to retreat on July 5, allowing for the restoration of civilian travel along the route.

While the road is now accessible, the CDF CDM Siyin has stated that the gate will be open only from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily for safety reasons.

Fighting had been intense along this route, especially near Mualpi Village, with Chin resistance forces launching a large-scale defensive operation since May to repel an offensive by heavily armed junta troops in northern Chin State. The clashes led to significant junta casualties and the seizure of military equipment and ammunition by the resistance.

========================

📌📌 4. “Yaung Ni Live in Texas” to Be Held on July 19

July 17

The “Yaung Ni Live in Texas” event is scheduled to take place on July 19, which coincides with Martyrs’ Day and falls on a Saturday this year.
