On the occasion of Myanmar democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s 80th birthday, Duwa Lashi La, Interim President of the National Unity Government (NUG), delivered a message of birthday wishes and called on the public to continue striving for \u201cfreedom from fear\u201d in solidarity with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interim President noted that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has endured four full years of unjust detention under the military dictatorship, a period that he described as not only deeply difficult and oppressive for her personally, but also for the entire nation and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reaffirmed the NUG\u2019s commitment to the core goals of the Spring Revolution\u2014namely, the complete dismantling of the military dictatorship and the establishment of a new federal democratic union\u2014pledging to continue this effort together with the people. He stressed that \u201cjust as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi never acted in ways that betrayed the public\u2019s trust, the NUG will also never act against the will of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interim President warned that if the next generation of leaders hesitates to shoulder the responsibilities of the nation, even as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi reaches her 80th year, it would deeply sadden her. He added that \u201cthe people are yearning for a new generation of leaders who are truly worthy of their trust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He praised the efforts of the \u201cSUU 80 Birthday Campaign\u201d led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s son, Ko Htein Lin (Kim), noting that such campaigns help rejuvenate public spirit and determination to continue the fight for democracy. He emphasized that even while Daw Aung San Suu Kyi remains unjustly imprisoned, work toward peace and stability must continue. And when she is released, he said, efforts must persist to ensure the nation\u2019s peaceful and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of Myanmar democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s 80th birthday, the National League for Democracy (NLD) Central Executive Committee held a commemorative event, during which Prime Minister Mann Win Khaing Than sent a message of tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his message, the Prime Minister emphasized that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s birthday is no ordinary occasion, but a powerful moment that reveals to the world the people\u2019s strong and unwavering desire for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that people from across Myanmar and around the globe had marked her birthday with tributes, expressing their respect and unwavering support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born on June 19, 1945, as the daughter of independence hero General Aung San, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi rose to prominence as a central leader of Myanmar\u2019s democracy movement following the 1988 uprising. Throughout the decades, she faced brutal repression and threats to her life under military regimes, yet stood steadfast alongside the people in their pursuit of democracy. Her leadership earned overwhelming public support in the 1990, 2012, 2015, and 2020 elections and has been enshrined in the nation\u2019s political history as a distinguished leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although she remains unjustly imprisoned by the military junta, the Prime Minister wrote that her unwavering bond with the people continues to breathe strength into the Spring Revolution. He highlighted that the junta\u2019s denial of access to international representatives stems from their fear of her enduring influence over the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister also extended special recognition to the \u201cSUU 80 Birthday Campaign\u201d led by her youngest son, Ko Htein Lin (Kim), stating that the initiative had reinvigorated public determination and deepened their commitment to the democratic cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On behalf of the National Unity Government, the Prime Minister reiterated a heartfelt wish for the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners and pledged to resolutely continue the struggle, side by side with the people, until the dictatorship is decisively overthrown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European aerospace giant Airbus<\/strong> has announced the complete divestment of all its shares<\/strong> in AVI China Industry & Technology Company Limited (AviChina)<\/strong>\u2014a Chinese weapons manufacturer known to have supplied Y-12 transport aircraft and K-8 light attack trainer jets<\/strong> to the Myanmar military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This decision was welcomed by Myanmar-focused activist groups including Justice For Myanmar<\/strong>, Info Birmanie<\/strong>, and the Blood Money Campaign<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a report released in September 2024<\/strong>, Justice For Myanmar<\/strong> and Info Birmanie<\/strong> revealed that Airbus held a 5.03% stake in AviChina<\/strong>, making it the largest foreign shareholder in the company. As of June 30, 2024, the value of Airbus\u2019s investment was reported to be USD 140 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airbus\u2019s divestment came in response to sustained pressure from civil society organizations, protest groups, trade unions, and human rights activists around the world. These groups had urged Airbus to sever its financial ties with AviChina<\/strong>, a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AviChina<\/strong> has been identified as a key supplier of military hardware to Myanmar\u2019s junta, including K-8 fighter-trainer jets<\/strong>, Y-12 multipurpose aircraft<\/strong>, associated equipment, and technology. These aircraft have reportedly been used by the Myanmar military to conduct bombing campaigns across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airbus officially completed its divestment on April 1, 2025<\/strong>, and confirmed via email to Justice For Myanmar<\/strong> and Info Birmanie<\/strong> that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAirbus SE has sold all of its shares in AVI China Industry & Technology Company Limited. Airbus no longer holds any investment in AVIC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma Yatanar Maung<\/strong>, spokesperson for Justice For Myanmar, stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAirbus\u2019s divestment sends a clear message to AVIC and the Chinese government that there will be financial and reputational costs for supporting the Myanmar military with fighter jets and related weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johanna Chardonni\u00e8res<\/strong>, coordinator at Info Birmanie<\/strong>, added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis divestment should serve as a wake-up call to other European companies\u2014whether directly or indirectly linked to the Myanmar junta\u2014that continued association with the military regime is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulan<\/strong>, spokesperson for the Blood Money Campaign<\/strong>, also commented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe terrorist junta relies heavily on military support from AVIC and AviChina to continue committing war crimes. Airbus must now remain firmly committed to responsible business and international human rights standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
