UK Government Calls for Immediate Release of All Journalists Detained by Military<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>May 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK Government has called for the immediate release of all journalists currently detained by Myanmar&#8217;s military regime.<br>This statement was issued today, May 3, on the occasion of&nbsp;<strong>World Press Freedom Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the UK Government, press freedom in Myanmar has severely deteriorated, and the country now ranks as the&nbsp;<strong>second-highest jailer of journalists<\/strong>&nbsp;in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing the&nbsp;<strong>2024 World Press Freedom Index<\/strong>&nbsp;released by&nbsp;<em>Reporters Without Borders (RSF)<\/em>, Myanmar ranks&nbsp;<strong>171st out of 180 countries<\/strong>&nbsp;in terms of media freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ongoing internet restrictions in Myanmar have also hampered the collection of crucial humanitarian information and obstructed real-time responses to disasters such as earthquakes.<br>The UK emphasized that the media must be allowed to operate freely and independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK Government strongly condemned the military&#8217;s oppression of the public&#8217;s access to information and urged for the&nbsp;<strong>immediate release of all journalists currently in detention<\/strong>&nbsp;under the military regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>========================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc\ud83d\udccc<strong>&nbsp;2. Two Police Officers Disguised as Civilians Arrested for Espionage in Hakha<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>May 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two police officers disguised as civilians and allegedly engaged in espionage activities were arrested in Hakha, Chin State, according to a May 2 evening announcement by the&nbsp;<strong>Chinland Defense Force &#8211; Hakha (CDF-Hakha)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two officers, affiliated with the military council, were reportedly apprehended on&nbsp;<strong>May 1<\/strong>&nbsp;while pretending to be local civilians and conducting surveillance in Hakha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, on&nbsp;<strong>April 21<\/strong>, CDF-Hakha had also detained two other police officers accused of extorting and threatening innocent civilians at gunpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CDF-Hakha stated that it would continue to take action against members of the military regime who are harming innocent civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the group announced that it is willing to receive and protect regime personnel who no longer wish to serve under the junta, ensuring their safe passage to secure locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>========================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc\ud83d\udccc<strong>&nbsp;3. Junta Launches Airstrikes on Momeik Following Failed Talks with TNLA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>May 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following an announcement by the&nbsp;<strong>Ta&#8217;ang National Liberation Army (TNLA)<\/strong>&nbsp;that peace talks held with the military junta in&nbsp;<strong>Kunming, China<\/strong>, had failed after two days of meetings, the junta launched airstrikes on villages in&nbsp;<strong>eastern and western Momeik Township<\/strong>, according to local sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At around&nbsp;<strong>11:47 PM on May 2<\/strong>, junta aircraft carried out bombing raids on&nbsp;<strong>Bahin Village<\/strong>&nbsp;in eastern Momeik and&nbsp;<strong>Utein Village<\/strong>&nbsp;in the west\u2014areas under TNLA control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While no casualties were reported, homes and structures, including a&nbsp;<strong>monastery in Utein Village<\/strong>, sustained significant damage, according to local residents and resistance forces on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The failed negotiations reportedly took place on&nbsp;<strong>April 28\u201329<\/strong>, involving junta representatives and a TNLA delegation led by&nbsp;<strong>Major General Tar Jot Jar<\/strong>, under Chinese mediation in Kunming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the TNLA, the talks collapsed because it rejected a demand by the junta to withdraw its forces from areas it controls\u2014<strong>Naungcho, Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Momeik, and Mogok<\/strong>\u2014and to allow the junta\u2019s reentry into&nbsp;<strong>Namhsan<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Manton Townships<\/strong>, which are part of the Ta&#8217;ang self-administered region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the increased risk of further airstrikes by the junta, resistance forces have urged civilians living in TNLA-controlled areas to&nbsp;<strong>avoid crowded public spaces<\/strong>, especially&nbsp;<strong>religious buildings, hospitals, clinics, and schools<\/strong>, and to&nbsp;<strong>construct secure bomb shelters<\/strong>&nbsp;at their residences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>========================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc\ud83d\udccc<strong>&nbsp;4. Basic Ta&#8217;ang Literacy Courses Conducted in Five Villages During April<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>May 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April,&nbsp;<strong>basic Ta&#8217;ang language literacy courses<\/strong>&nbsp;were conducted in five villages across&nbsp;<strong>Namkham, Manton, Mongmit, and Momeik Townships<\/strong>&nbsp;in Ta&#8217;ang region, according to the&nbsp;<strong>Information and Public Relations Department of PSLF\/TNLA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The courses, organized by the&nbsp;<strong>Ta&#8217;ang Language and Literature Committee (TLA)<\/strong>, were held in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kaung Khae<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Manlon Villages<\/strong>&nbsp;(Namkham Township)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yaypone Village<\/strong>&nbsp;(Manton Township)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Palaung Kone Village<\/strong>&nbsp;(Mongmit Township)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Patmyasho Village<\/strong>&nbsp;(Momeik Township)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of&nbsp;<strong>220 male students and 345 female students<\/strong>&nbsp;participated in the classes.
