U Kyaw Moe Tun States: It Is Time for the International Community to Seriously Consider and Take Decisive Action Against the Military Council’s Atrocities

April 26

U Kyaw Moe Tun, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has stated that it is time for the international community to seriously and profoundly consider the military council’s atrocities and take decisive action.

He made these remarks during a special meeting organized under the theme “Forced Displacement and Refugee Protection” by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the UN Headquarters in New York on April 24.

U Kyaw Moe Tun explained that the majority of the Rohingya population in Myanmar has been forcibly displaced and is now living as refugees in Bangladesh and other countries.

Additionally, he highlighted that the military coup of February 2021 and the military’s ensuing atrocities have had devastating impacts on the people across Myanmar, significantly increasing the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Although the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that there are around 3.5 million IDPs, he noted that the actual figure could be even higher.

He also informed the international community that 19.9 million people in Myanmar are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, and over 100,000 homes and religious structures have been destroyed.

U Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized that a majority of the Myanmar people have been forced to flee to neighboring countries and elsewhere. Women, youth, and children have been particularly hard-hit, suffering from worsening hardship and destitution. He added that the recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake has compounded their already severe plight.

He stressed that the crisis unfolding in Myanmar is also undermining peace and security in the region and beyond, making it critically important to provide adequate protection for the displaced persons and refugees.

U Kyaw Moe Tun unequivocally pointed out that the root cause of the ongoing situation is the military dictatorship, leaving no room for dispute. He called attention to the Myanmar people’s aspiration to dismantle the military dictatorship and end the unlawful military coup, as well as their efforts to establish a federal democratic union. In this regard, he underscored that the support and solidarity of the international community are vitally important.

Therefore, he urged participants at the meeting that the international community must now seriously and decisively address the situation.

========================

📌📌 2. Artillery Shell Fired by Northern Regional Military Command in Myitkyina Hits Non-CDM Housing, Killing One Civilian

April 26

In Myitkyina, Kachin State, an artillery shell fired by the Northern Regional Military Command struck and exploded within the Mali Hka housing complex, where Non-CDM (non-civil disobedience movement) government staff reside, resulting in the death of a young civilian, according to local sources.

The Northern Regional Military Command reportedly began indiscriminate artillery shelling around 11:30 PM on April 25. One of the shells landed and exploded inside the Mali Hka housing area, where Non-CDM personnel live.

As a result of the explosion, a young person lost their life, and several housing buildings for government staff were damaged by artillery fire.

Residents of Myitkyina reported that they had been hearing artillery shelling since the morning of April 25, which they believe was being directed toward the Waingmaw area.

At the same time, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and its allied forces have been launching coordinated offensives to seize remaining junta strongholds in Bhamo. Amid this, it was learned that the military council forces fired artillery shells from Myitkyina toward Waingmaw, which is located only about four miles across the Irrawaddy River from Myitkyina and is under the control of the KIA and allied forces, according to military analysts.

========================

📌📌 3.
