Oakland Street Renamed in Memory of Myanmar Immigrant Killed in Hit-and-Run<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In honor of Daw Santu Maya, a 73-year-old Myanmar immigrant who tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident, the City of Oakland has renamed a local street after her.<\/p>\n

Daw Santu Maya had moved to Oakland to reunite with her children when, on June 16, 2023, she was fatally struck by a reckless driver while walking near her home. The driver fled the scene, leaving her with no chance of survival. Thanks to relentless efforts by her grieving family, local residents, and the media, the perpetrator was eventually arrested and brought to justice.<\/p>\n

As a tribute to her memory and to raise awareness about pedestrian safety, the Oakland City Council has officially renamed the intersection where she was killed. Formerly known as Vicksburg Street<\/strong>, it will now bear the name Santu Maya Way<\/strong>. A formal dedication ceremony is set to take place on February 26<\/strong>, with her family, city officials, and community members in attendance.<\/p>\n

Daw Santu Maya\u2019s children, Ko Anee and Ma Sanjoo<\/strong>, along with her grandchildren, will host a luncheon following the event to honor her legacy.<\/p>\n

The ceremony will be held at the intersection of Foothill & Vicksburg in Oakland, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM<\/strong>, with monks, city representatives, and members of the Myanmar community invited to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
