THE TAMING OF A MATHEMATICIAN<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

” How good of you to come.” said my daughter’s<\/p>\n

Maths teacher.”Didn’t expect you so soon.Please<\/p>\n

sit down.”<\/p>\n

I said”Thank you.” and sat down.<\/p>\n

She said,”I think you have seen your daughter’s<\/p>\n

Maths papers.It’sthe third time she has failed in<\/p>\n

Mathematics, but not too badly though,let me see, 33, 35,36 out of 100.Not too bad.With proper<\/p>\n

guidance she could be well above fifty.You see<\/p>\n

your daughter in not stupid.One may even say<\/p>\n

she’s quite bright.But she’s careless.Look how she had multiplied two and three to get five instead of six. Here she had copied twenty five<\/p>\n

instead of fifty five.In solving a problem,she seeems to know when to add,subtract,multiply or<\/p>\n

divide but the way she handles the numbers is all<\/p>\n

wrong.”<\/p>\n

”But,” I argued,”knowing what to do is the p<\/p>\n

essential part of mathematical training ,is it not?”<\/p>\n

The teacher replied,”What’s the use of knowing<\/p>\n

what to do if she handles the numbers wrongly?”<\/p>\n

I wanted to argue,but decided against it.The teacher seemed to be looking for something.Then<\/p>\n

she found it. She said ,”Here it is .Can you imagine how your daughter had constructed a<\/p>\n

right angle, 30 ,45 , 60 degrees ? Using a protractor instead of using a ruler and compass.”<\/p>\n

”But,”I argued,”Is it mentioned in the question that all constructions are to be done with ruler and compass ?”<\/p>\n

”Of course not.That’s to be understood.”<\/p>\n

I wanted to argue, but decided against it.The<\/p>\n

teacher added something about the way some parents trying to justify their children’s doings.<\/p>\n

After the usual goodbyes I left. That was the<\/p>\n
