However, she said that during this period, the military had intensified airstrikes, artillery attacks, and the burning and destruction of civilian communities.

She stated that more than 100,000 people had died as a result of the conflict during the five years since the military coup, with civilians accounting for the majority of the victims. She also accused the military of deliberately targeting religious buildings, schools, and hospitals.

Julie Bishop criticized the military-organized 2026 election and its purported peace negotiations as sham processes. She pointed to the exclusion of major political parties, voting conducted amid ongoing conflict, and continued military attacks as evidence that these initiatives lacked legitimacy.

Although the military has claimed that its airstrikes target resistance organizations, Bishop said that at least 8,500 civilians, including women and children, had been deliberately killed.

She called for an immediate cessation of violence and the release of more than 20,000 people currently held in detention.

Bishop emphasized that Myanmar’s conflict cannot be resolved through military means. She warned that the crisis represents a major challenge to the credibility and effectiveness of the United Nations and urged decisive action before conditions deteriorate further.

Eight Civilians Killed and 11 Injured in Military Attacks in Kyaikto Township Despite Absence of Fighting

m.CDM | October 28, 2026

Eight civilians were killed and 11 others seriously injured in airstrikes, artillery shelling, and drone attacks carried out by Myanmar’s military in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, despite no active fighting taking place in the affected areas, according to a statement issued by the Karen National Union (KNU) headquarters.

The KNU reported that the casualties occurred during a one-week period between October 9 and 15.

On October 12, the military reportedly carried out a drone bombing in Ngapyawtaw Village, killing three civilians: 43-year-old U Min Zaw, Daw Sandar, and 21-year-old Maung Zwe Zin Phyo.

Another civilian, U Chit Thae Aung, sustained severe injuries that required the amputation of his right leg. A vehicle and a shop were also damaged.

On October 13, the military reportedly attacked an area sheltering displaced civilians near Kyaukphya Auk Village using aircraft, artillery, and drones. One shelter for displaced people was destroyed by fire.

On the same day, military aircraft reportedly struck Alu Ywargyi Upper Village in Kyaikto Township, killing five civilians and injuring 10 others. One house was destroyed by fire, while 13 additional houses sustained damage.

The KNU also reported that military forces conducted repeated artillery, drone, and aerial attacks on October 9, 12, and 15 in civilian residential and working areas, including Pathein Taung, Moe Baw Nat Sin Village, Zee Kone Su, and the entrance to Shan Su Village.

These attacks reportedly damaged civilian property, including a motorcycle repair shop.

According to the KNU, the attacks have caused significant losses of civilian lives, homes, property, and livelihoods. Displaced communities are also facing increasingly serious security and humanitarian challenges.

AA Sinks Two Military Vessels in Kaladan River Estuary as Fierce Fighting Continues Near Bhamo

m.CDM | October 28, 2026

The Arakan Army (AA) reportedly attacked a group of military vessels stationed in the Kaladan River estuary between Sittwe and Wirathani (Pauktaw) in Rakhine State, damaging three vessels, two of which were completely sunk.

AA spokesperson U Khaing Thukha said the attack took place on the night of October 26, during the Thadingyut full moon, as part of a naval operation.

According to him, two military vessels were completely sunk, while a third sustained severe damage.

Meanwhile, fighting reportedly continues to intensify in and around Sittwe.

U Khaing Thukha alleged that military forces have been destroying civilian bomb shelters throughout the city to force residents into situations where they could be used as human shields.

He described these actions as deliberate preparations to kill civilians and characterized them as crimes against humanity.

He also confirmed that Ngapyi Island, near Sittwe, remains entirely under AA control despite a recent attempt by military forces to land troops there in large numbers.

In Kachin State, intense fighting is also continuing between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), allied resistance forces, and Myanmar military troops in Bhamo.

Military forces have reportedly launched major offensives against KIA-controlled areas near Infantry Battalion 47 over the past week.

In response, KIA-led forces have launched counteroffensives against Military Operations Command 21 (MOC-21).

A military source said KIA forces are particularly focused on capturing the strategically important Moe Sein Island, located west of MOC-21.

Clashes are reportedly occurring almost daily, with military forces using airstrikes and various types of drones to defend their positions.

In September, the military reportedly reinforced its troops and weapons in Bhamo through river transport before launching further offensives.

It has also reportedly carried out airstrikes against several bridges in an effort to disrupt supply routes used by KIA and allied forces.

Kawlin District Battalion 4 Apologizes to Civilians Affected by Military Operations Using Human Shields in Wuntho

m.CDM | October 28, 2026

Kawlin District Battalion 4 has issued a public apology to civilians affected by military operations in Wuntho Township, where Myanmar military forces allegedly used civilians as human shields.

The apology, issued on October 27 during the Thadingyut festival, was accompanied by an update on conditions on the ground.

According to the battalion’s statement, local residents have endured severe hardships while facing large-scale military offensives.

The statement said that Battalion 4, together with Battalions 1, 2, and 3 and allied district and township People’s Defense Force units, had made significant sacrifices in lives and resources during the fighting.

It acknowledged that civilians had also suffered losses of life, injuries, financial hardship, and shortages of food and medical supplies.

Regarding military operations, the battalion alleged that military troops had detained and tortured prisoners of war and civilians, forcing some to walk ahead of advancing columns to trigger landmines and using others as human shields against gunfire.

These tactics reportedly created serious difficulties for resistance fighters during combat.

The statement further alleged that as resistance forces conducted attacks or withdrew according to battlefield conditions, military troops looted valuable belongings from civilian homes and shelters, burned buildings, and committed sexual violence in villages along their routes.

Battalion 4 asked the public for understanding and forgiveness for any shortcomings or weaknesses in its operations during the revolutionary struggle.

Paying tribute to fallen resistance fighters, the battalion expressed its apology to the public from the front lines.

The battalion, operating under the National Unity Government’s Military Region 1, pledged to continue its efforts to serve the interests of the people throughout the remaining stages of the revolution.

Resistance Forces Fire resistance groups said their forces completed the operation without suffering casualties.

However, they said they were still gathering information about casualties among military and Pyu Saw Htee personnel, as well as damage to the targeted position.

Monywa District Battalion 3 had previously conducted another rocket attack on October 25, together with the Monywa Township People’s Defense Team, against military troops stationed inside the Kyaukka Shwe Gu Ni Pagoda compound.

<p
