Reports indicate that the death toll there has already reached dozens.

Amid this natural disaster, on September 28, fighter jets belonging to Myanmar’s military bombed a crowded market in Kyauktaw, Rakhine State, dropping two bombs. According to news reports, nearly 50 people were killed as a result of the explosions and subsequent fires, while around 60 others were injured.

The attack took place at around noon at a market known as the “India Market,” located near the Kispanadi Bridge spanning the Kaladan River in Kyauktaw, northern Rakhine State. Because the airstrike occurred near the bridge, some people traveling across it on motorcycles and other travelers were also reportedly killed or injured.

At the India Market itself, casualties resulted not only from the bomb blasts but also from fires that broke out afterward. The death toll reportedly approached 50.

The market known as India Market is located near the Kaladan River. After the military authorities imposed restrictions on the movement of commodities, food supplies, and fuel into Rakhine State beginning in November 2023, cross-border trade developed through the Paletwa area from the Indian border.

Kyauktaw became a transit and distribution point for goods imported from India. Because many of the commodities traded there originated in India, the marketplace came to be known locally as the “India Market.”

The high number of casualties was largely due to the airstrike taking place around midday, when the market was crowded. Fires continued to burn after the bombing, and some of those injured in the initial explosions reportedly later died in the flames.

Airstrikes in northern Rakhine State have been reported frequently over the past several years. Among the locations reported as having been targeted are a hospital in Mrauk-U, residential neighborhoods in Kyauktaw, schools, and locations that had previously served as military positions of the junta.

The United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) has taken control of much of northern and central Rakhine State, as well as areas farther south, including Thandwe and Gwa townships, while Sittwe, Manaung, and Kyaukphyu remain outside its control.

Some observers have concluded that the military’s airstrikes are intended to destabilize the ULA/AA’s administration in areas under its control and pressure the organization into negotiations or an accommodation with the military authorities.

It is difficult to determine the extent to which these airstrikes have struck military targets. However, residential homes, hospitals, schools, and marketplaces in civilian areas have also repeatedly been hit. The original article characterizes such attacks on civilians as war crimes.

Following the Kyauktaw airstrike, the Arakan Army issued a statement saying that it would retaliate severely against every individual involved in the attack.

The AA said it was keeping detailed records of those who ordered the airstrikes, those who carried out the orders and attacks, and others involved. It stated that an equivalent and proportionate response would be carried out without undue delay.

Disaster in the South

On the same day that the crowded area of Kyauktaw in northern Rakhine State was bombed from the air, communities in southern Myanmar were struggling with severe natural disasters.

Floods and landslides were affecting Launglon, Thayetchaung, southern Yebyu and Dawei in Tanintharyi Region. Landslides and mud had buried homes, and fatalities were being reported.

On September 27 and 28, flooding and landslides were reported in nearly 20 villages in Launglon Township in Dawei District, with the number of deaths rising into the double digits.

The flooding and landslides along the Tanintharyi coast occurred in connection with the same broader weather system associated with flooding in Bangkok, Thailand. Yet, as of recent days, there had been little visible evidence of the military authorities dispatching substantial rescue and relief assistance to the worst-affected areas.

Apart from photographs showing the chief minister of the Tanintharyi regional administration visiting some flooded areas in Dawei, there were no reports of him traveling to affected villages in Launglon and Thayetchaung townships.

Nor was there visible evidence of substantial emergency rescue operations involving government services such as the fire department or military in those areas. The article alleges that the authorities have remained largely inactive because some of these locations are considered PDF-controlled areas.

More than two days after the disaster began, nongovernmental and civilian relief organizations appeared to be carrying much of the burden of rescuing and assisting people injured or killed by the floods and landslides in villages across Launglon and Thayetchaung townships.

The article argues that the Tanintharyi regional authorities’ apparent practice of concentrating rescue and relief efforts primarily on flood victims in urban neighborhoods under their control, while providing little assistance to communities elsewhere, presents a deeply troubling picture.

The powerful weather system that caused destruction and deaths in Dawei District subsequently moved northward and northwestward from Tanintharyi Region, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds along its path.

At the same time that communities were confronting this natural disaster, Myanmar’s military authorities continued carrying out airstrikes in Rakhine State and other parts of the country.

The juxtaposition of these events, the article concludes, illustrates what it sees as the military authorities’ priorities: even as communities face deadly natural disasters, maintaining power and territorial control remains paramount.

Myanmar Spring Chronicle – Scenes from September 28 (MoeMaKa), September 29, 2026 As Southern Myanmar Suffers Floods and Landslides, Airstrikes Hit Kyauktaw in Rakhine State Since September 26 and 27, consecutive days of heavy rain associated with a low-pressure system—which…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[9,58
100
post-10180","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-current","category-features","tag-myanmar-spring-revolution
["GET
