How Should We Understand the NLD Central Working Committee\u2019s Position?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On September 15, International Day of Democracy, the Central Working Committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD) sent a message to an event organized by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH). Some of the political positions and approaches expressed in the message appeared inconsistent with the path pursued by the National Unity Government (NUG), prompting criticism and debate among revolutionary forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The apparent contradiction is particularly difficult to reconcile for supporters of both the NUG and the NLD. While the NUG has embraced armed resistance, the NLD Central Working Committee stated that political problems should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful political means rather than through the use of force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the first time the NLD Central Working Committee has advocated resolving political disputes through political dialogue. In previous years, its statements have similarly emphasized dialogue and peaceful political means as the preferred way of addressing the country\u2019s political crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, some NLD leaders living abroad serve in the NUG, while officials associated with the Central Working Committee that issued the latest message are also involved with the CRPH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CRPH was established within days of the February 2021 military coup, and the NUG was formed roughly three months later. The CRPH and NUG subsequently chose a political course that included armed resistance. Yet when the NLD Central Working Committee issues statements defining the party\u2019s political position, it has never explicitly embraced armed revolution as an NLD policy. This raises the question of why these positions appear to diverge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a related question: Does the NLD Central Working Committee actually represent the NLD as a party?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several months after the emergence of the CRPH and NUG following the coup, an eight-member Central Working Committee was formed at the end of October 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and U Win Myint were facing court proceedings. News reports from that period said their lawyers had been asked about their views regarding the establishment of the Central Working Committee. Reports said Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had indicated that the formation of such a committee by some NLD leaders abroad was not legitimate and that she would neither take responsibility for it nor accept responsibility for its actions. Those reports attributed the information, conveyed through lawyers at the time, to NLD Central Committee member U Toe Lwin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why, then, are there such fundamental differences between the CRPH, the NUG and the NLD Central Working Committee over their current political positions and strategies? To date, there has been no clear and definitive public explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the 1988 pro-democracy uprising and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s emergence as a leader in Myanmar politics, she has not advocated armed struggle as a means of achieving political objectives. Consequently, many people want to know how she views the armed resistance movement that emerged following the 2021 military coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is, however, no way to know her position with certainty. She was detained on the night of the coup and subsequently prosecuted on numerous charges. She has been denied access to virtually everyone, including members of her family. As a result, her views on the armed resistance strategy adopted by the CRPH and NUG remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This leaves several unanswered questions. Is the NLD Central Working Committee attempting to signal that there is no organizational connection between the Spring Revolution and the NLD? Or is it seeking to prevent the armed resistance from having consequences for the party\u2019s imprisoned leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be other explanations as well. Yet the organizations concerned have not publicly provided clear answers to these questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many members of the public, however, there remains a desire to see Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the NLD, the CRPH and the NUG standing clearly together\u2014with a common position and a common political path.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
