Myanmar\u2019s military is accused of using cluster munitions in airstrikes on Shwegu in Kachin State. Ten civilians were reportedly detained and used as human shields in Yinmabin, while separate drone and air attacks were reported in Salin and Nam Mae Khon. The Chinland Council says the military approached it through a third party with a peace proposal. And CDM civil-service networks, together with Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s son Kim Aris, are calling on the United Nations to retain Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun as Myanmar\u2019s permanent representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now, the news in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Military forces reportedly used cluster munitions in attacks on villages in Shwegu Township, Kachin State, on the night of August 28 and the morning of August 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local military sources said fighter jets bombed villages and civilian-populated areas along the Ayeyarwady River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The weapons were reported to be cluster munitions, which are banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions joined by nearly 120 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strikes reportedly caused civilian casualties and damaged homes and buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A military flotilla traveling north along the Ayeyarwady River has also reached the Shwegu area. Residents have been fleeing as villages along the river continue to face airstrikes and heavy artillery fire from military vessels and army positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Yinmabin Township, Sagaing Region, a military column reportedly detained 10 residents of Son Chaung village and took them away as human shields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The military convoy had left the Northwestern Regional Military Command in Monywa on August 25. Local residents also accused troops of taking civilian property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The column continues to operate around Kani and Yinmabin townships, forcing thousands of villagers to flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In nearby Chaung-U Township, military forces reportedly entered Khin Mon village on August 29 after firing heavy weapons. Resistance groups have warned civilians to temporarily avoid the Khin Mon\u2013Shwe Da Kyaw road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Salin Township, Magway Region, military forces reportedly dropped drone bombs near Htein Kan and Tamar Chaung villages on August 28, even though no fighting was taking place at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One civilian was killed and three others were injured. One of the wounded reportedly required a leg amputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Karenni State, military aircraft also bombed villages around Nam Mae Khon following fighting on August 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At least six homes were damaged, including the home of a schoolteacher. No civilian casualties were reported because residents had already evacuated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Burma Research Institute, or BRI, has urged the international community to take action over the reported killing of Reverend William and local resident Pu Nam Ceu from Chuncung village in Hakha Township, Chin State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two men were reportedly arrested by troops from Light Infantry Division 77 on May 16 and are believed to have been killed around June 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Church officials and relatives believe they were killed after being accused of supporting CDF-Hakha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BRI described the incident as an extrajudicial killing and called on the United States and the international community to pursue accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organization also says that since the coup, around 118 homes in Chuncung village have been burned, 16 residents killed and five injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Restoration Council of Shan State, or RCSS, says 78 PNLO and PNLA members and their family members joined the organization in southern Shan State on August 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The RCSS said the group was welcomed and each person was given 500,000 kyat in assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, a source close to the PNLA disputed that account, saying the fighters were detained while collecting rice rations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The source said around 30 of those involved were fighters and the rest were their wives and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Kawthoolei Army, or KTLA, has announced the dissolution of the Sa Ka Paw Battalion, which had been cooperating with resistance forces against the military in Tanintharyi Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The battalion commander was removed on August 17, and the entire unit was officially expelled on August 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A battalion spokesperson said the decision may have been connected to the unit\u2019s refusal to follow certain orders from the central leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The spokesperson said the battalion would not fight other resistance groups and would continue targeting what it considers the common enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The unit has reportedly been cooperating with KNU and KNLA forces in fighting the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Dawei National Liberation Army says resistance forces ambushed a military column near the Dawei Deep Sea Port area in Tanintharyi Region on August 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group claims 15 military personnel were killed and many others injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Resistance forces said they seized eight rifles, 11 magazines and around 200 rounds of ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several resistance organizations reportedly took part in the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, in Shwegu, Kachin State, resistance forces led by the KIA reportedly attacked a military flotilla with drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two military vessels were reportedly hit, and three people were said to have been killed, including one police officer, one soldier and one porter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A further FPV drone attack reportedly set another military vessel on fire, although casualty figures from that strike have not been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chinland Council says Myanmar\u2019s military approached it through a third party with a peace proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Shwe Khar, secretary-general of the Chinland Council and foreign minister of the Chinland government, made the statement during a briefing on August 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said representatives acting on behalf of military leader Min Aung Hlaing approached the Chin side through a third party in Aizawl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Chinland Council said it would not accept the current invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Shwe Khar said the council would continue to follow the peace policy of the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He argued that genuine peace negotiations should include all relevant groups, rather than inviting only ethnic armed organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regional networks of Civil Disobedience Movement civil servants have called on the UN General Assembly, the Credentials Committee and UN member states to retain Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun as Myanmar\u2019s permanent representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The groups said he continues to represent the wishes of Myanmar\u2019s people and has consistently spoken internationally about human-rights violations and alleged war crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They also condemned efforts by the military authorities to replace him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s younger son, Kim Aris, made a similar appeal on August 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the military authorities should not receive international recognition while serious allegations of airstrikes against civilians, arbitrary detention, torture and sexual violence are being documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said Myanmar\u2019s seat at the United Nations should not become a reward for military leader Min Aung Hlaing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aris said accountability should come before recognition and urged the UN to ensure that Myanmar\u2019s democratic voice continues to be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Karen National Union says cooperation with Thai authorities has led to the seizure of 104 illegally cut logs along the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On August 23, KNU authorities reportedly seized 45 logs in Kawthoolei territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three days later, KNU officials and Thailand\u2019s Royal Forest Department reportedly confiscated another 59 logs on the Thai side of the Salween River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The KNU said the operations show stronger cross-border cooperation on law enforcement, illegal logging and natural-resource protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organization says it has been expanding border security and trade administration since early 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, the National Unity Government\u2019s Ministry of Defence says the \u201cKyo & Swun\u201d campaign raised US$180,693 to support People\u2019s Defence Force units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The campaign was designed to improve aerial technology capabilities for the PDF and local defence groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It ran from June 30 to July 30 with an original target of US$150,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The campaign exceeded that goal by more than US$30,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NUG Ministry of Defence has issued a certificate of appreciation thanking supporters for their contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
